L’opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è la suggestiva Natività dipinta dall’artista olandese Matthias Stomer nel 1646, oggi custodita presso il Palazzo Comunale di Monreale.

La scena si svolge all’interno di un contesto notturno, all’interno di una stalla frequentata dalle galline che si vedono dipinte in primo piano e dall’asino del quale si vede il muso a destra.

L’unica fonte luminosa che consente di rischiarare il buio è il Bambino stesso che riesce a irradiare la propria luce divina tutt’attorno, illuminando i personaggi che gli stanno attorno.

La scelta accurata dei colori da parte di Stomer e la sua capacità di rendere i soggetti in maniera realistica conferiscono all’opera una sensazione di tranquillità e serenità ma anche di grande sacralità, invitando lo spettatore a riflettere sul potente simbolismo del momento della nascita di Gesù.

L’uso attento della luce conferisce all’immagine un’aura sacra, mettendo in risalto il divino nella scena.

È interessante notare come l’artista rappresenti le figure umane in modo estremamente realistico, con le loro emozioni, le loro peculiarità fisiche e i gesti che raccontano senza parola alcuna quella scena che si sta svolgendo sotto gli occhi dello spettatore.

Ogni dettaglio, dall’abbigliamento dei personaggi alla modesta stalla in cui si svolge la scena, contribuisce a creare un’atmosfera intensa e coinvolgente.

Per rendere omaggio al Salvatore appena venuto al mondo, Stomer dipinse attorno alla mangiatoia umili pastori e contadini.

The Works of Christmas: the Nativity by Matthias Stomer

The Christmas work that I propose to you today is the evocative Nativity painted by the Dutch artist Matthias Stomer in 1646, today kept in the Town Hall of Monreale.
