Relitto romano con centinaia di anfore: rinvenuto dai carabinieri a 160 metri di profondità
Ieri 28 luglio 2023, è stato reso noto il ritrovamento di un’antica nave romana risalente al periodo compreso fra il II e il I secolo a.C. con l’intero carico formato da centinaia di anfore.
La scoperta è stata fatta e poi resa nota dal Dipartimento dei Carabinieri per la Protezione del Patrimonio Culturale lungo la costa di Civitavecchia.
I subacquei impegnati nell’operazione, hanno trovato un gran numero di anfore del tipo Dressel 1 B, la maggior parte delle quali risultano integre.
Facevano parte di un deposito largo 12 metri e lungo ben 17 metri, il che fa presumere che la nave che le trasportasse potesse avere una lunghezza maggiore di 20 metri.
Mediante l’aiuto del sonar e del Veicolo Operato a Distanza ROV, gli ufficiali impegnati nell’operazione hanno portato a termine la mappatura del sito archeologico sommerso, ritrovando anche i due ceppi di ancoraggio romani in metallo che appartenevano alla nave da carico.
Le ricerche sono state supportate dalla motovedetta d’altura classe N 802 Frau.

Roman wreck with hundreds of amphorae: found by the carabinieri at a depth of 160 metres
Yesterday 28 July 2023, the discovery of an ancient Roman ship dating back to the period between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC was announced. with the entire load consisting of hundreds of amphorae.
The discovery was made and then announced by the Carabinieri Department for the Protection of Cultural Heritage along the coast of Civitavecchia
The divers involved in the operation found a large number of Dressel 1 B amphorae, most of which are intact.
They were part of a warehouse 12 meters wide and 17 meters long, which suggests that the ship that transported them could have been longer than 20 meters.
With the help of sonar and the Remote Operated Vehicle ROV, the officers involved in the operation completed the mapping of the submerged archaeological site, also finding the two Roman metal anchor shackles that belonged to the cargo ship.
The searches were supported by the N 802 Frau class offshore patrol boat.
