Il profeta Zaccaria è uno de primi veggenti che affrescai e si trova immediatamente sopra la porta d’ingresso della Cappella Sistina, testata Ovest.

Sotto la targa che reca il suo nome fu apposto lo stemma pontificio della famiglia della Rovere, quella di origine di papa papa Giulio II che mi commissionò la grandiosa decorazione della volta della Sistina.

Zaccaria ha uno sguardo intenso ed è tutto concentrato nella lettura del libro che tiene fra le mani. Appare calmo e per niente impressionato da ciò che sta leggendo anche se, il Vasari, non la pensasse esattamente in questo modo.

Cercando per il libro scritto d’una cosa che egli non truova, sta con una gamba alta e l’altra bassa: e mentre che la furia del cercare quel ch’e’ non truova lo fa stare così, non si ricorda del disagio che egli in così fatta positura patisce.

Zaccaria è abbigliato con un’abito giallo ocra a maniche lunghe, con un colletto bordato di smaltino. Sulla spalla sinistra porta un mantello rosso cremisi che poi, sulle gambe svela la sua fodera verde chiaro.

L’ultimo restauro condotto su questa figura si è rivelato essere molto complesso e laborioso. Non fu semplice per Colalucci e il suo team rimuovere le ridipinture settecentesche realizzate da Annibale Mazzuoli, lasciando intatti i miei esigui ma comunque presenti ritocchi a secco.

Zaccaria non è uno dei profeti più noti ai vostri tempi ma andando indietro nei secoli, ritornando al Medioevo prima e al Rinascimento poi, scoprirete che veniva invece tenuto in grande considerazione. Fu lui a preannunciare l’entrata in Gerusalemme di Cristo: “Esulta con tutte le tue forze, figlia di Sion; effondi il tuo giubilo, Gerusalemme! Ecco, a te viene il tuo Re:… è umile e cavalca un asinello”

Proprio per questa visione, scelsi di collocarlo al di sopra della porta d’ingresso e vi spiego il perché.

Il Santo Padre durante, la Domenica delle Palme, entrava con il corteo proprio da quella porta nel ruolo di Cristo che entrava in Gerusalemme a dorso d’asino come il più umile degli umili, proprio come aveva predetto i profeta.

Esiste un mio disegno, oggi appartenente alla collezione degli Uffizi, in cui studiai con attenzione l’espressione del volto di Zaccaria.

Lo realizzai attorno al 1508 ed è caratterizzato da un tratteggio essenziale ma potente che riesce a raccontare tutto ciò che volevo raccontare attraverso quegli occhi, quella bocca, quella faccia segnata dal tempo e dalle fatiche vissute.

Zechariah: the prophet of wisdom

The prophet Zechariah is one of the first seers that I frescoed and is located immediately above the entrance door of the Sistine Chapel, west end.

Under the plaque bearing his name was affixed the papal coat of arms of the della Rovere family, the family of origin of Pope Julius II who commissioned me to decorate the vault of the Sistine Chapel.

Zaccaria has an intense gaze and is completely concentrated on reading the book he is holding in his hands. He appears calm and not at all impressed by what he is reading even if he, Vasari, he doesn’t think exactly that way.

Searching through the written book for something he can’t find, he stands with one leg high and the other low: and while the fury of looking for what he can’t find makes him stay like this, he doesn’t remember the discomfort that in this position he suffers.

Zaccaria is dressed in an ocher yellow long-sleeved dress, with a collar trimmed with enamel. Over his left shoulder she wears a crimson red cloak which then, over his legs unveils its pale green lining.

The last restoration carried out on this figure turned out to be very complex and laborious. It was not easy for Colalucci and his team to remove the eighteenth-century repaintings made by Annibale Mazzuoli, leaving my small but still present dry retouches intact.

Zechariah is not one of the best known prophets of your time but going back through the centuries, returning first to the Middle Ages and then to the Renaissance, you will find that this prophet was held in high esteem. It was he who foretold Christ’s entry into Jerusalem: “Rejoice with all your might, daughter of Zion; pour out your jubilation, Jerusalem! Behold, your King comes to you:… she is humble and rides a donkey”

Precisely for this vision, I chose to place it above the entrance door and I will explain why.

During Palm Sunday, the Holy Father entered the procession through that very door in the role of Christ who entered Jerusalem on the back of a donkey as the humblest of the humble, just as the prophet had predicted.

There is a drawing of mine, now belonging to the Uffizi collection, in which I carefully studied the expression on Zaccaria’s face.

I made it around 1508 and it is characterized by an essential but powerful hatch that manages to tell everything I wanted to tell through those eyes, that mouth, that face marked by time and the hardships experienced.
