Gioele è uno dei sette profeti che affrescai nella volta della Cappella Sistina nel 1509. Si trova al lato del riquadro dell’Ebbrezza di Noè, proprio al di sotto del grande tino e dalla parte opposta della Sibilla Delfica.

Non è un caso che si trovi proprio in quel punto lì dato che proprio proftizzò “Le aie saran piene di frumento e i tini traboccheranno di vino e di olio”.

Il profeta Gioele rappresenta l’intelligenza, uno dei doni concessi dallo Spirito Santo.

Indossa una tunica morbida della stessa tonalità di colore di quella indossata da Dio nella scena della Creazione. Dalla spalla destra parte una fascia blu che taglia in due il petto mentre una stola verde gli cinge la vita. Il mantello rosso contorna la figura ricadendo sulle gambe.

E’ tutto concentrato a leggere la pergamena che sorregge con entrambe le mani mentre i due putti alle spalle pare siano intenti a discutere di chissà che cosa fra di loro. Gioele è per antonomasia il profeta delle calamità, ovvero di tutti quegli eventi disastrosi che avverranno sulla terra, dell’oscuramento della terra e del cielo.

Ed avverrà, dopo queste cose, che io spanderà il mio Spirito sopra ogni carne, e i vostri figliuoli e le vostre figliuole profetizzeranno; i vostri vecchi sogneranno de’ sogni, i vostri giovani vedranno delle visioni

The prophet Joel: intelligence

Joel is one of the seven prophets that I frescoed in the vault of the Sistine Chapel in 1509. he It is located to the side of the panel of the Drunkenness of Noah, just below the large vat and on the opposite side of the Delphic Sibyl.

It is no coincidence that he is right at that point since he prophesied “The threshing floors will be full of wheat and the vats will overflow with wine and oil”.

The prophet Joel represents intelligence, one of the gifts bestowed by the Holy Spirit.

He wears a soft tunic of the same shade of color as that worn by God in the Creation scene. From his right shoulder starts a blue band that cuts his chest in two while a green stole encircles his waist. The red cloak surrounds the figure falling on his legs.

He is completely concentrated on reading the parchment that he holds with both hands while the two putti behind him seem to be intent on discussing who knows what between themselves. Joel is par excellence the prophet of calamities, that is of all those disastrous events that will take place on earth, of the darkening of the earth and of the sky.

And it shall come to pass after these things that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy; your old ones will dream dreams, your young ones will see visions
