Se per la scultura adoperavo solo blocchi unici per ogni opera, con il legno non era possibile.

Pensate all’ampiezza delle braccia aperte del Crocifisso di Santo Spirito: trovare un tronco di legno di tiglio che abbia un diametro simile non è facilissimo a meno di abbattere una pianta secolare e lasciarla stagionare.

Non solo, la questione è legata direttamente anche a una maggiore lavorabilità, per modellare meglio ad esempio l’inclinazione del capo, sui volumi delle gambe e altri dettagli: insomma c’è bisogno di spessori diversi rispetto a quelli limitanti di un tronco di legno seppur grande.

Così, prima di mettermi al lavoro su una scultura in legno, dovevo assemblare varie parti di legno per dar forma a una bozza da scolpire successivamente nel modo desiderato.

Sebbene il Crocifisso di Santo Spirito a una prima occhiata sembri scolpito in un pezzo unico di legno, non è affatto così. Lo so che non si direbbe ma è fatto da nove parti differenti e ve le elenco una ad una.

C’è il tronco centrale che è la parte intera più consistente al quale sono attaccate le due braccia, poi il viso ha una parte aggiunta, così come è aggiunta la parte di un ginocchio, la parte retrostante del polpaccio della gamba destra e il tallone più due pezzetti di legno di tiglio aggiunti per modellare con la sgorbia le scapole.

Già che ci sono vi dico anche che nella zona del fianco sinistro c’è un vero e proprio foro che probabilmente provvedetti a stuccare. Probabilmente quella mancanza era data da un nodo naturale del legno che saltò o che tolsi di proposito per evitare di avere problemi a scultura ultimata.

The Crucifix of the Holy Spirit: a work torn apart

If for the sculpture I used only unique blocks for each work, with wood it was not possible. Think of the breadth of the open arms of the Crucifix: finding a trunk of lime wood that has a similar diameter is not easy unless you cut down a centuries-old plant and let it mature.

Not only that, also for a matter of greater workability, to better model, for example, the inclination of the head, the volumes of the legs and other details, there is a need for different thicknesses.

So before I started working on a wooden sculpture I had to assemble various parts of the trunk to give shape to a draft to be sculpted in the desired way.

Although the Crucifix of Santo Spirito at first glance appears to be carved from a single piece of wood, this is not the case at all. I know it wouldn’t seem like it, but it’s made up of nine different parts: I’ll list them one by one.

There is the central trunk which is the whole most consistent part to which the two arms are attached, then the face has an added part, as well as the part of a knee, the rear part of the calf of the right leg and the heel. plus two pieces of lime wood added to shape the shoulder blades with the gouge.

While I am there, I also tell you that in the area of ​​the left side there is a real hole that I probably proceeded to plaster. Probably that lack was given by a natural knot in the wood that jumped or that I deliberately removed to avoid having problems when the sculpture was finished.
