Last Judgment and Sistine Vault: two pictorial techniques compared
Rich chromatic mixtures, spread with very fat, fast and scratchy brushstrokes. This is how I chose to fresco the counter-wall of the Last Judgment.
While in the vault I had used very diluted colors, creating very thin pictorial films so as to make one think of watercolors, I changed methodology for the Judgment. I spread the colors on a very tight and compact plaster, taking 456 days of work.
In the vault corrections and repentances are rare while in the Judgment they are numerous. I dry-painted the elements that spanned several days and used the same way to apply all those colors that poorly tolerate the basicity of calcium hydrate, such as the yellow of Christ’s Almond. Did you know?
It is conceivable that I dry painted some finishes between one day and the next to avoid jumps in tone. Unfortunately, today those adjustments have been lost due to the countless interventions that have been repeated over the centuries and due to the tearing action caused by the animal glues laid out on several occasions.
