Cristo di Santo Spirito: il legno trasformato in carne viva
“Era da poco morto Lorenzo il Magnifico quando il giovane Michelangelo non ancora ventenne si accinse a scolpire un Crocifisso di legno, che si posa-sopra il mezzo tondo dell’altare maggiore, a compiacenza del priore il quale gli diede comodità di stanze”, Giorgio Vasari.
Il Cristo, alto un metro e trentanove centimetri che scolpii a soli 19 anni, ha un incarnato livido quasi trasparente.
I capelli li feci modellando un impasto di mestica a stucco e stoppa. Talmente son definiti tanto da che paion morbidi come quelli veri. In corrispondenza del pube, al centro del petto e sotto le ascelle, dipinsi la leggera peluria tipica di un ragazzo qualsiasi di quattordici anni.
Le gocce di sangue rigano il volto del Cristo crocifisso a partire dalla zona della fronte, martoriata dalla corona di spine. Un tempo il Cristo mio aveva sia la la corona di spine che probabilmente il panno a coprirgli il pube ma andarono perduti nel corso dei secoli.
Ogni piega della carne è perfetta: i dettagli delle ginocchia, dei gomiti e delle dita, anche se ne mancano alcune o parte di esse, lasciano sbalorditi per la loro correttezza anatomica. Insomma, mi venne proprio bene questo Cristo.
È difficile rimanere indifferenti dinnanzi al Crocifisso di Santo Spirito. Come disse la Lisner “ Talmente vivo che risponde a tutti i giochi di luce”.
Diedi al Cristo un’espressione dolcissima. Il suo naso è paragonabile a quello che avranno poi la Vergine e il Cristo della Pietà Vaticana.
La prima sensazione che si ha trovandosi di fronte a questa opera è quella di voler salire fino ai piedi della Croce, abbracciare il Cristo, togliere i chiodi e scenderlo da lì per vedere se ancora respira, se ancora ha qualche possibilità di tornare a vivere.
Nella compostezza del corpo c’è la straziante verità del fatto storico. L’unica cosa che fa trattenere lo spettatore dal salir fin lassù è la sua posizione elevata. Il Cristo di Santo Spirito invita a pensare, commuove: il legno trasformato in carne viva.

I made his hair by modeling a mixture of putty and tow. They are so defined that they seem as soft as real ones. In correspondence of the pubis, in the center of the chest and under the armpits, I painted the light hair typical of any boy of fourteen.
The drops of blood streak the face of the crucified Christ starting from the area of the forehead, tormented by the crown of thorns. Once my Christ had both the crown of thorns and probably the cloth to cover his pubis but they were lost over the centuries.
Every fold of the flesh is perfect: the details of the knees, elbows and fingers, even if some or part of them are missing, are amazed by their anatomical correctness. In short, this Christ was really good for me.
It is difficult to remain indifferent before the Crucifix of the Holy Spirit. As Lisner said “So alive that he responds to all the play of light”.
I gave Christ a very sweet expression. His nose is comparable to what the Virgin and Christ of the Vatican Pietà will later have.
The first sensation one has when faced with this work is that of wanting to climb to the foot of the Cross, embrace Christ, remove the nails and descend him from there to see if he still breathes, if he still has any chance of returning to life.
In the composure of the body there is the harrowing truth of the historical fact. The only thing that keeps the spectator from climbing up there is his elevated position. The Christ of the Holy Spirit invites us to think, moves: wood transformed into living flesh.
