Se avessi la possibilità di ritornare in vita potrei rimetter mano a quelle commissioni che, per un motivo o l’altro, non portai a termine. Ce n’è una in particolare che avrei desiderato terminare ma invece, a causa di motivi di forza maggiore, riuscii appena a iniziare.

Di cosa sto parlando? Ebbene, il 24 aprile del 1503 l’Arte della Lana di Firenze mi commissionò la realizzazione di 12 statue raffiguranti ciascuna uno degli apostoli.  Avrebbero avuto un’altezza di quattro braccia e mezzo ovvero 270 centimetri ed erano destinate ad abbellire ulteriormente gli interni della cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore.

Ve lo immaginate che gioiello sarebbe diventato il duomo se avessi potuto realizzare questi apostoli? Adesso i visitatori, che peraltro son già tanti, sarebbero perlomeno il doppio e forse doppio sarebbe stato anche il prezzo del biglietto per aver diritto ad accedere a quella magnifica Chiesa.

Fatto sta che riuscii a dare solo qualche scalpellata a un blocco trasformandolo in un San Matteo appena sbozzato. Quest’opera attualmente è custodita entro le quattro mura della Galleria dell’Accademia, a Firenze, precisamente nella galleria che conduce alla tribuna del David assieme ad altre opere mie.

Peccato non abbia potuto avere sette vite come i gatti. Chissà, forse è meglio così: con tutto quel che ho tribolato in una sola, sette sarebbero state troppe da reggere.

The twelve apostles never realized

If I had the chance to come back to life I could get back to those commissions that, for one reason or another, I did not complete. There is one in particular that I would have liked to finish but instead, due to reasons of force majeure, I just managed to start.

What am I talking about? Well, on April 24, 1503, the Art of Wool of Florence commissioned me to make 12 statues representing each one of the apostles. They would have a height of four and a half arms or 270 centimeters and were destined to further embellish the interior of the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

Can you imagine what a jewel the cathedral would have become if I had been able to realize these apostles? Now the visitors, who are already many, would be at least twice as much and perhaps double the price of the ticket to have the right to access that magnificent Church.

The fact is that I managed to give only a few chisels to a block turning it into a freshly sketched San Matteo. This work is currently kept within the four walls of the Accademia Gallery, in Florence, precisely in the gallery that leads to the David’s gallery along with other works of mine.

Sin could not have had seven lives like cats. Who knows, maybe it’s better this way: with all that I have troubled in one, seven would have been too many to hold up.
