chi ’l fugge e scaccia sempre

Né contro all’alte e nuove
bellezze in donna altera
ha forza altro riparo
che schivi suo disdegno o suo mercede.
Io giuro a chi nol crede,
sol mi difende e scampa chi m’uccide.

The only defense against a love that consumes the soul

If man stopped fleeing the fear of death, he would find an even more ferocious enemy before him. It is commonly believed that the fear of the end is the greatest torment of existence, but I have learned that it is also a most providential defense.

If that fear, which each of us stubbornly tries to banish, remained where it was born, without accompanying our every step, then Love, cruel and invincible, would find the heart of man completely defenseless.

With even stronger and more tenacious weapons, he would test even the noblest soul, inflicting suffering that no virtue could endure.

Death opens our gaze to heaven, love chains it to the earth

I do not consider death a misfortune. My soul looks beyond the earthly world and hopes that precisely through death, united with divine grace, it can finally know true joy.

For this reason, the fear of death becomes precious. Those destined to continue living are inevitably exposed to the passions, desires, and torments of earthly love. Those who contemplate their own mortality, however, remember that all worldly beauty is destined to vanish, and that only the heavenly knows no end.

This is why this fear surpasses all others: it restrains the heart’s excesses and reminds man of his true destiny.

Before the beauty of a haughty woman, no man can say he is safe

There are beauties so lofty and admirable that they seem superior to nature itself. They do not belong merely to the face or figure, but exert a dominion over the soul of those who contemplate them.

When such beauties inhabit a haughty, proud, and distant woman, every defense collapses. There is no shelter capable of protecting us from either her contempt or her benevolence.

Her rejection fuels desire; her courtesy ignites an even more painful hope. Both paths lead to the same torment: for love finds nourishment both in distance and in the illusion of closeness.

My suffering is the reason for her smile

I swear to anyone who would doubt my words: she who has won my heart looks at my tears without compassion. She almost seems to take pleasure in them. My suffering does not move her, but it becomes part of the power she exerts over me.

He who loves continues to live only to suffer, while he who is loved remains unaware, or indifferent, to the pain he causes.

Because the fear of death saves from love

It may seem paradoxical, but my experience has taught me so.

The only force capable of freeing me from the dominion of the woman who torments me is not another passion, nor reason, nor time. It is the memory of death.

He who kills me—that is, the thought of my mortal end—is at the same time he who defends and saves me. Meditating on death frees the soul from the deceptions of passions and restores to man the measure of earthly things.

On the one hand, earthly love, capable of enslaving even the noblest heart; on the other, meditation on death: Christian hope.

The soul that looks to heaven through divine grace finds in the thought of death a liberation from the passions that consume man. For this reason, the fear of death, so despised by men, becomes the only shield against a love that laughs at the tears of the lover and that, even as it promises happiness, leads to the most subtle of torments.

Se ’l timor della morte
chi ’l fugge e scaccia sempre
Amor crudele e forte

con più tenaci tempre
d’un cor gentil faria spietate pruove.
