Il marmo respira? No, ma è capace di trattenere il fiato fissando nell’eternità momenti che altrimenti si perderebbero per sempre.

Nel marmo ho scolpito concetti che continuano a raccontare tutt’oggi a chi non si ferma solo alle apparenze e si concede un attimo per ascoltare la loro voce.

A volte, mentre progettavo le opere mie, la mente mi portava a pensare versi ruvidi, asciutti ma capaci di descrivere ciò che pensavo in quei momenti.

Mentre ero al lavoro per la Sagrestia Nuova della Basilica di San Lorenzo, volli far parlare il Giorno e la Notte. E mentre il mio scalpello dava forma al Giorno e alla Notte, compresi che quelle figure non potevano restare mute. Dovevano parlare. Dovevano riflettere sul tempo e sulla sua sconfitta.

Il tempo che uccide e viene sconfitto

Io immaginai il Giorno e la Notte come esseri vivi, eterni nel loro alternarsi. Scorrono senza tregua, consumano ogni cosa, portano inevitabilmente alla morte. E così confessano:

“Noi, col nostro veloce corso, abbiamo condotto alla morte il duca Giuliano.”

Il tempo non si ferma, non risparmia nessuno. Neppure i grandi. Neppure i Medici.

Eppure, subito dopo, ecco il rovesciamento: “È ben giusto che egli ne faccia vendetta.”

Ma quale vendetta può compiere un uomo morto?

La vendetta della fama

La vendetta di Giuliano non è terrena, ma eterna. “Avendo noi morto lui, lui così morto ha tolta la luce a noi.”

Con la sua memoria, con la sua fama, egli ha oscurato il Giorno e la Notte stessi. Li ha resi inutili. Il loro eterno scorrere non conta più, perché lui, nella gloria, non appartiene più al tempo.

La fama può vincere ciò che è invincibile per natura.

“Cogli occhi chiusi ha serrato i nostri, che non risplendon più sopra la terra.”

Il tempo non illumina più, non domina più. È stato superato.

Una domanda che inquieta

E infine, lasciai sospesa una domanda, quasi un brivido: “Che avrebbe di noi dunque fatto, mentre vivea?”

Se Giuliano, da morto, può annullare il tempo, cosa avrebbe potuto fare da vivo? È la misura della grandezza, ma anche del potenziale umano che resta inesplorato.

In fondo le parole e la scultura sono la stessa cosa: entrambe cercano di sfidare il tempo. E se davvero l’arte può farlo allora sì, Giuliano ha avuto la sua vendetta.

E io, nel marmo, ne fui testimone.

“El Dì e la Notte parlano, e dicono: Noi abbiàno col nostro veloce corso condotto alla morte el duca Giuliano; è ben giusto che e’ ne facci vendetta come fa. E la vendetta è questa: che avendo noi morto lui, lui così morto ha tolta la luce a noi e cogli occhi chiusi ha serrato e’ nostri, che non risplendon più sopra la terra. Che arrebbe di noi dunche fatto, mentre vivea?”

Day and Night: eternal in their alternation

Does marble breathe? No, but it is capable of holding its breath, capturing in eternity moments that would otherwise be lost forever.

In marble, I have sculpted concepts that continue to speak to those who go beyond appearances and take a moment to listen to their voice.

Sometimes, while I was designing my works, my mind led me to verses that were rough, dry, yet capable of describing what I was thinking in those moments.

While I was working on the New Sacristy of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, I wanted to make Day and Night speak. I hadn’t sculpted those figures to remain silent. And as my chisel gave shape to Day and Night, I understood that those figures could not remain silent. They had to speak. They had to reflect on time and its defeat.

Time that kills and is defeated

I imagined Day and Night as living beings, eternal in their alternation. They flow relentlessly, consuming everything, leading inevitably to death. And so they confess:

“We, with our swift course, have led Duke Giuliano to his death.”

Time stands firm, spares no one. Not even the great. Not even the Medici.

And yet, immediately afterward, comes the reversal: “It is only right that he take vengeance.”

But what vengeance can a dead man wreak?

The Revenge of Fame

Giuliano’s vengeance is not earthly, but eternal. “Since we have killed him, he, thus dead, has taken away our light.”

With his memory, with his fame, he has obscured Day and Night themselves. He has rendered them useless. Their eternal flow no longer matters, because he, in glory, no longer belongs to time.

Fame can conquer what is invincible by nature.

“With his eyes closed he has closed ours, which no longer shine upon the earth.”

Time no longer illuminates, no longer dominates. It has been surpassed.

A disturbing question

And finally, I left a question hanging, almost a shiver: “What would he have done with us, then, while he was alive?”

If Giuliano, in death, can erase time, what could he have done in life?

It is the measure of greatness, but also of human potential that remains unexplored.

Ultimately, words and sculpture are the same thing: both seek to defy time.

And if art can truly do that, then yes, Giuliano had his revenge.

And I, in marble, bore witness to it.

“Day and Night speak, and say: We have with our swift course led Duke Giuliano to his death; it is only right that he should take vengeance as he does. And this is the vengeance: that when we killed him, he, thus dead, took away our light and, with his eyes closed, closed ours, so that they no longer shine upon the earth. What would he have done with us, then, while he was alive?”
