Bernini e i Barberini: la grande mostra del 2026 a Palazzo Barberini che racconta la nascita del Barocco
La stagione espositiva romana del 2026 si apre con un evento imperdibile per tutti coloro che amano il Barocco: “Bernini e i Barberini”, la nuova mostra delle Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica.
Dal 12 febbraio al 14 giugno 2026, attraverso le sale di Palazzo Barberini sarà possibile addentrarsi nelle vicende che hanno dato forma al rapporto tra Gian Lorenzo Bernini e Maffeo Barberini, uno dei suoi più grandi committenti. Futuro papa Urbano VIII, Maffeo fu una figura chiave nella formazione del Barocco romano.
La mostra, realizzata con il sostegno di Intesa Sanpaolo e con il patrocinio della Fabbrica di San Pietro, celebra anche un anniversario fondamentale: i 400 anni dalla consacrazione della Basilica di San Pietro avvenuta nel 1626: uno dei cantieri più emblematici del genio berniniano.
Perché la mostra “Bernini e i Barberini” si prospetta imperdibile
La mostra esplora il ruolo cruciale di Maffeo Barberini come primo e decisivo committente di Bernini. Senza il sostegno del cardinale – poi pontefice – il giovane artista non avrebbe potuto sviluppare quel linguaggio innovativo che avrebbe rivoluzionato la scultura e l’architettura europea.
Gli studiosi lo definiscono come il “vero scopritore di Bernini”, e questa esposizione consente di averne offre una lettura aggiornata, ricca di opere e prestiti internazionali importanti.

Opere straordinarie in arrivo da musei di tutto il mondo
Tra i capolavori che il pubblico potrà ammirare a Palazzo Barberini ci saranno il San Sebastiano del Bernini dal Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza di Madrid, il Putto con drago del J. Paul Getty Museum di Los Angeles e le Quattro Stagioni appartenenti alla collezione Aldobrandini.
In mostra anche la preziosa galleria dei ritratti degli antenati Barberini, riunita eccezionalmente a Palazzo Barberini, i busti e ritratti di Urbano VIII in marmo e bronzo e l’unico dipinto pubblico di Bernini, accostato al pendant di Andrea Sacchi, entrambi prestiti della National Gallery di Londra
La mostra includerà anche disegni, incisioni e modelli legati ai grandi progetti per San Pietro, dal Baldacchino al monumento funebre di Urbano VIII.
Sei sezioni per scoprire l’autentico volto del Barocco
Strutturata in sei sezioni tematiche, la mostra conduce i visitatori dagli esordi di Bernini, ancora legati al tardo manierismo paterno, alla piena maturità artistica.
Il percorso intreccia scultura, pittura e architettura, permettendo di comprendere come la visione dei Barberini abbia influenzato in modo determinante la nascita del Barocco romano.
Particolarmente affascinante sarà l’inusuale sezione dedicata al Bernini pittore, presentata con opere rarissime e tele mostrate per la prima volta a un ampio pubblico in questa occasione.
Il contributo del “gusto Barberini” e dei protagonisti del Seicento
A chiudere l’esposizione, una panoramica sul gusto artistico della famiglia Barberini con le celebri Apes Urbanae con opere di Guido Reni, Alessandro Algardi, François Duquesnoy e ritratti scultorei come quello di Costanza Bonarelli proveniente dal Museo del Bargello e di Thomas Baker del Victoria and Albert Museum.
Catalogo e prestiti internazionali
La mostra sarà accompagnata da un catalogo edito da Allemandi, con saggi dei curatori e approfondimenti sulle opere esposte.
Tra gli istituti che hanno concesso prestiti figurano alcuni dei più importanti musei del mondo: Louvre, Albertina, Musei Vaticani, National Gallery (Londra e Washington), Morgan Library, Victoria and Albert Museum, insieme a numerosi collezionisti privati.

The 2026 exhibition season in Rome opens with an unmissable event for all Baroque enthusiasts: “Bernini and the Barberinis,” the new exhibition at the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica.
From February 12 to June 14, 2026, the rooms of Palazzo Barberini will explore the events that shaped the relationship between Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Maffeo Barberini, one of his greatest patrons. The future Pope Urban VIII, Maffeo was a key figure in the formation of the Roman Baroque.
The exhibition, organized with the support of Intesa Sanpaolo and the patronage of the Fabbrica di San Pietro, also celebrates a key anniversary: the 400th anniversary of the consecration of St. Peter’s Basilica in 1626, one of the most emblematic projects of Bernini’s genius.
Why the “Bernini and the Barberinis” Exhibition Is Unmissable
The exhibition explores the crucial role of Maffeo Barberini as Bernini’s first and decisive patron. Without the support of the cardinal—later pope—the young artist would not have been able to develop the innovative language that would revolutionize European sculpture and architecture.
Scholars call him the “true discoverer of Bernini,” and this exhibition offers an updated interpretation, rich in works and important international loans.
Extraordinary works from museums around the world
Among the masterpieces the public will be able to admire at Palazzo Barberini will be Bernini’s Saint Sebastian from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, the Putto with Dragon from the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the Four Seasons from the Aldobrandini collection.
Also on display are the precious gallery of portraits of the Barberini ancestors, exceptionally reunited at Palazzo Barberini, the marble and bronze busts and portraits of Urban VIII, and Bernini’s only publicly held painting, alongside its companion piece by Andrea Sacchi, both on loan from the National Gallery in London.
The exhibition will also include drawings, engravings, and models related to the major projects for St. Peter’s, from the Baldacchino to the funerary monument of Urban VIII.
Six sections to discover the authentic face of the Baroque
Structured into six thematic sections, the exhibition takes visitors from Bernini’s early work, still rooted in his father’s late Mannerism, to his full artistic maturity.
The exhibition intertwines sculpture, painting, and architecture, allowing visitors to understand how the Barberinis’ vision decisively influenced the birth of the Roman Baroque.
The unusual section dedicated to Bernini the painter will be particularly fascinating, featuring extremely rare works and canvases shown to a wider audience for the first time on this occasion.
The Contribution of the “Barberini Taste” and the Protagonists of the 17th Century
The exhibition concludes with an overview of the artistic taste of the Barberini family, featuring the famous Apes Urbanae, with works by Guido Reni, Alessandro Algardi, and François Duquesnoy, as well as sculptural portraits such as that of Costanza Bonarelli from the Bargello Museum and that of Thomas Baker from the Victoria and Albert Museum.
