Oltre sette secoli di storia dei tarocchi raccontati in un percorso coinvolgente all’Accademia Carrara: sta per aprire i battenti la nuova mostra che mette al centro della scena tutte le 74 carte del celebre mazzo Colleoni.

Per la prima volta, dopo più di cent’anni, tornano assieme le carte del mazzo di tarocchi più completo oggi conosciuto, abitualmente custodite tra l’Accademia Carrara di Bergamo, la Morgan Library di New York e una collezione privata.

L’occasione della ricongiunzione delle carte ha dato forma a un progetto e a un’indagine che, dal Quattrocento al Novecento e oltre, esplora la vicenda dei tarocchi attraverso prestigiosi prestiti italiani e internazionali.

Il percorso espositivo approfondisce la storia, le committenze, artisti, tecniche esecutive tenendo in conto le più recenti analisi scientifiche. Il mistero dei tarocchi ancora oggi continua a suscitare emozioni e nella mostra si tenterà di spiegarne le origini di questa fascinazione.

Nati come passatempo d’élite e diffusi grazie alla stampa, i tarocchi si trasformarono nel Settecento in strumenti di divinazione, per poi conquistare nel Novecento un ruolo dominante nell’immaginario culturale e simbolico contemporaneo.

Il progetto espositivo restituisce così la più ampia panoramica mai realizzata: dalle origini del mazzo alle corti ricche e raffinate dell’Italia settentrionale del Quattrocento, dall’evoluzione del gioco aristocratico a quello popolare, fino alla nascita della lettura divinatoria e alla rinnovata fortuna dei tarocchi nel secolo scorso e nel nostro tempo.

La mostra, realizzata in collaborazione con la Morgan Library di New York, si arricchisce di prestiti eccezionali provenienti da istituzioni come la Bibliothèque nationale de France di Parigi, la Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library della Yale University e la Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze.

La mostra ‘Tarocchi. Le origini, le carte, la fortuna’ aprirà al pubblico all’Accademia Carrara di Bergamo dal 27 febbraio 2026 fino al 2 giugno 2026.

The Tarot: From History to the Renaissance Courts at the Accademia Carrara

Over seven centuries of tarot history recounted in an engaging exhibition at the Accademia Carrara: the new exhibition, which puts all 74 cards of the famous Colleoni deck at center stage, is about to open.

For the first time, in over a hundred years, the cards of the most complete tarot deck known today are reunited, usually held between the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, the Morgan Library in New York, and a private collection.

The reunion of the cards has given rise to a project and an investigation that, from the 15th to the 20th century and beyond, explores the history of tarot through prestigious Italian and international loans.

The exhibition explores the history, patrons, artists, and execution techniques, taking into account the most recent scientific analyses. The mystery of the tarot continues to arouse emotion even today, and the exhibition will attempt to explain the origins of this fascination.

Born as an elite pastime and popularized by the printing press, tarot cards evolved into tools of divination in the 18th century, later taking on a dominant role in contemporary cultural and symbolic imagery in the 20th century.

The exhibition project thus provides the broadest overview ever created: from the deck’s origins to the rich and refined courts of 15th-century northern Italy, from the evolution of the aristocratic game to the popular one, up to the birth of divinatory reading and the renewed popularity of tarot cards in the last century and today.

The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Morgan Library in New York, is enriched by exceptional loans from institutions such as the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, and the Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze.

The exhibition “Tarot. The Origins, the Cards, the Fortune will open to the public at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo from February 27, 2026, until June 2, 2026.
