In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, avvenuta il 6 marzo del 1475, vi propongo le opere che mi raffigurano, realizzate nel corso dei secoli.

Sapete che potete trovarmi affrescato anche nel loggiato dello Spedale degli Innocenti?

Ebbene si, fu Bernardino Pocetti a inserirmi nella decorazione della volta al di sopra del portone centrale, assieme alle glorie di Cosimo I.

In quel riquadro l’artista immortalò il momento della concessione degli statuti all’Accademia delle Arti e del Disegno da parte del Granduca. Tra i presenti si nota la presenza dello spedalingo degli Innocenti Vincenzo Borghini mentre sta per baciare il testo redatto da Cosimo I.

Tutt’attorno si muovono diversi artisti ai quali faccio capo io. Si tratta infatti di una citazione figurata della prima riunione dell’Accademia appena nata, che si svolse il 31 gennaio del 1563. Fu l’atto ufficiale con cui mi venne riconosciuto di essere il maestro di tutti; come ebbe modo di scrivere l’Ariosto ‘più che mortal angelo divino’.

«Ánno voluto […] per l’obligo che à tutta l’Arte alla Signoria Vostra, eleggerla per Capo, Padre et Maestro di tutti, non avendo questa Sua città né forse il mondo el più eccellente in queste tre professioni che se n’abbi memoria», così mi scrisse il Vasari in una lettera che mi inviò a Roma il 17 marzo 1563, un anno prima che passassi a miglior vita.

Benedetto Varchi invece, avrebbe scritto l’anno dopo in quella sorta di romanzo che furono le mie esequie: «eletto in cielo e mandato in terra da Dio per dare l’ultimo compimento e l’estrema perfezzione alle
tre arti».

Michelangelo 550: I, Frescoed by Pocetti in the Loggia of the Spedale degli Innocenti

On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, which occurred on March 6, 1475, I present to you works depicting me, created over the centuries.

Did you know that you can also find me frescoed in the loggia of the Spedale degli Innocenti? Yes, it was Bernardino Pocetti who included me in the fresco that decorates the vault above the central door, alongside the glories of Cosimo I.

In that panel, the artist immortalized the moment when the Grand Duke granted the statutes to the Academy of Arts and Design. Among those present, Vincenzo Borghini, a member of the Spedale degli Innocenti, is noticeable as he is about to kiss the text written by Cosimo I.

All around are several artists, including myself. It is, in fact, a figurative quotation from the first meeting of the newly formed Academy, which took place on January 31, 1563. It was the official act by which I was recognized as the master of all; as Ariosto wrote, “more than a mortal, divine angel.”

“They have wished […] because of the obligation that the entire Art owes to Your Lordship, to elect you as Head, Father, and Master of all, since this city, yours, nor perhaps the world, has no one more excellent in these three professions than anyone can remember,” Vasari wrote to me in a letter he sent to Rome on March 17, 1563, a year before I passed away.

Benedetto Varchi, on the other hand, would write the following year in the sort of novel that was my funeral: “elected in heaven and sent to earth by God to give the ultimate fulfillment and extreme perfection to the three arts.”
