Le anime dannate, fatte salire a bordo della barca con tanto di ali piumate di Caronte, sono giunte alla bocca dell’Inferno. Il traghettatore, con il remo tenuto a due mani, intima loro di scendere: non è più tempo di ripensamenti.

Ad attenderle una schiera di demoni che con volti mostruosi usano la forza bruta per farli scendere dall’imbarcazione.

Per vincere le resistenze delle anime più restie, scelgono il mezzo marinaio noto anche come alighiero. Si tratta di uno strumento adoperato nel settore della nautica formato da una lunga asta di legno che termina con un uncino metallico.

Last Judgement: the damned dragged to the underworld with the half-sailor

The area that I frescoed at the bottom right of the Last Judgement has purely Dantesque references that come directly from the Hell that he had imagined.

The damned souls, made to board the boat complete with Charon’s feathered wings, have reached the mouth of Hell. The ferryman with the oar held in both hands orders them to get off: there is no more time for second thoughts.

A host of demons awaits them who with monstrous faces use brute force to make them get off the boat: To overcome the resistance of the most reluctant souls, they choose the half-sailor also known as the alighieri. This is a tool used in the nautical sector consisting of a long wooden rod that ends with a metal hook.
