Michelangelo 550: Io a Venezia accolto dai delegati del Doge e del Senato nell’opera di Maruccelli
In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, vi propongo uno dei dipinti a olio su tela custoditi a Casa Buonarroti che ha me per protagonista.
Il titolo dell’opera è ‘Michelangelo a Venezia è accolto dai delegati del Doge e del Senato’ e fu realizzato da Valerio Maruccelli tra il 1616 e il 1618.
L’episodio fa riferimento al momento in cui, nel 1529, andai a Venezia e fui accolto per l’appunto dai delegati del Doge e del Senato.
Probabilmente tutto l’impianto della scena riprodotto dal Maruccelli fu ispirato dallo stesso episodio dipinto dallo Stradano per gli apparati effimeri messi in piedi per celebrare il mio sontuoso funerale che ebbe luogo il 14 luglio del 1564 nella Basilica di San Lorenzo a Firenze.
Osservate con quanta cura il Maruccelli dipinse i tessuti che foggiano i diversi personaggi che si muovono sulla scena. Quegli abiti damascati e quelle pellicce sontuose, i preziosi bottoni e i colletti della biancheria che si intravedono al di sotto delle vesti sono degli autentici pezzi di bravura.
Ci tenevo a precisare però che elegante a quel modo lo fui solo in occasione della morte: non amavo indossare capi raffinati. Non m’importava nulla di andare in giro come un gran signore.
Mentre Raffaello era sempre abbigliato di tutto punto come se fosse lui uno di quei ricchi committenti delle opere che realizzava, io preferivo indossare abiti molto più sobri.

Michelangelo 550: I in Venice welcomed by the delegates of the Doge and the Senate in the work of Maruccelli
On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I propose one of the oil paintings on canvas kept at Casa Buonarroti that has me as the protagonist.
The title of the work is ‘Michelangelo in Venice is welcomed by the delegates of the Doge and the Senate’ and was created by Valerio Maruccelli between 1616 and 1618.
The episode refers to the moment in which, in 1529, I went to Venice and was welcomed precisely by the delegates of the Doge and the Senate.
Probably the entire structure of the scene reproduced by Maruccelli was inspired by the same episode painted by Stradano for the ephemeral apparatuses set up to celebrate my sumptuous funeral that took place on July 14, 1564 in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence.
Observe how carefully Maruccelli painted the fabrics that shape the different characters that move on the stage. Those damask dresses and those sumptuous furs, the precious buttons and the collars of the underwear that can be glimpsed under the clothes are authentic pieces of bravura.
I wanted to point out, however, that I was elegant in that way only on the occasion of death: I did not like to wear refined clothes. I did not care at all about going around like a great lord.
While Raphael was always dressed to the nines as if he were one of those rich patrons of the works he created, I preferred to wear much more sober clothes.
