Le opere della Pasqua: Compassione! di William Adolphe Bouguereau
Oggi è Venerdì Santo: il giorno dedicato agli ultimi momenti della Passione di Cristo. Per l’occasione voglio proporvi un dipinto emozionante realizzato nel 1897 da William Adolphe Bouguereau: Compassione!
Questa grande opera a olio su tela, alta oltre 2 metri e 60, non venne realizzata dall’artista su commissione ma era destinata al Salon degli artisti francesi del 1897.
Pensate che tanto fu orgoglioso di questo lavoro che decise di portarla anche all’Esposizione universale del 1900.
Il titolo dell’opera scelto dall’artista Compassione! con tanto di punto esclamativo fu per mettere in luce la dimensione tragica della Crocifissione di Cristo.
La drammaticità raccontata nel dipinto viene fatta però con un’estrema cura del dettaglio e con colori che sembrano abbracciare lo spettatore, per portarlo direttamente dentro la scena.
«Quando sarò elevato da terra, attirerò tutti a me» (Gv 12,32)
Il dolore più profondo in fondo l’artista lo conosceva molto bene per averlo provato sulla sua pelle. Bouguereau vide morire tre figli e la moglie prima di metter mano a questo capolavoro e nel 1900 perderà anche un quarto figlio.
L’opera è firmata in basso a sinistra con l’iniziale del nome, i cognome dell’artista e la data di realizzazione.

Easter works: Compassion! by William Adolphe Bouguereau
Today is Good Friday: the day dedicated to the last moments of the Passion of Christ. For the occasion I want to propose an emotional painting made in 1897 by William Adolphe Bouguereau: Compassion!
This large oil on canvas work, over 2 meters and 60 high, was not made by the artist on commission but was intended for the Salon of French artists of 1897.
Imagine that he was so proud of this work that he decided to bring it to the Universal Exhibition of 1900.
The title of the work chosen by the artist Compassion! with an exclamation point was to highlight the tragic dimension of the Crucifixion of Christ.
The drama told in the painting is done with extreme attention to detail and with colors that seem to embrace the viewer, to bring him directly into the scene.
“When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to myself” (John 12:32)
The artist knew the deepest pain very well because he had experienced it firsthand. Bouguereau saw three children and his wife die before starting this masterpiece and in 1900 he also lost a fourth child.
The work is signed at the bottom left with the initial of the name, the artist’s surname and the date of creation.
