Tondo Doni: sottoposto a un intervento di manutenzione ordinaria
Qualche giorno fa il Tondo Doni è stato sottoposto a un intervento di manutenzione ordinaria come accade ogni 18 mesi.
Una volta rimosso il cristallo di protezione, è stato tolto delicatamente da quella dalla sorta di lavatrice che lo incassa.
Il Tondo Doni collocato su un piano di lavoro, è stato sottoposto depolveratura eseguita con pennelli morbidi.
La restauratrice Elena Prandi che ha provveduto anche a reintegrare lacune minime relative alla cornice, applicando con un pennello molto sottile il Primal, la resina acrilica pura al 100% in dispersione acquosa che è completamente reversibile.
Una volta ricollocato al suo posto, il Tondo Doni, salvo esigenze diverse, rimarrà lì dentro per i prossimi 18 mesi.
Quell’opera è un caposaldo della pittura mondiale: un capolavoro assoluto che ha fatto da spartiacque tra un prima e un dopo.
Nel servizio Rai realizzato per l’occasione però viene messo nero su bianco e perfino detto nel video che il Tondo Doni sia un’opera su tela: eh no.
Si tratta di un dipinto a tempera grassa su tavola e, come era in uso nei primi del Cinquecento a Firenze, ci stesi sopra uno spesso strato preparatorio di colla e gesso e a seguire eseguii l’imprimitura con bianco di piombo e legante oleoso.
Un po’ più d’attenzione da parte del servizio pubblico mi pare doverosa, soprattutto nell’anno in cui si celebrano i 550 anni dalla mia nascita.
Ovvia.

Tondo Doni: subjected to routine maintenance
A few days ago, the Tondo Doni underwent routine maintenance as it does every 18 months.
Once the protective glass was removed, it was delicately removed from the sort of washing machine that houses it.
The Tondo Doni was placed on a work surface and subjected to dust removal using soft brushes.
Restorer Elena Prandi also filled in the small gaps in the frame, applying Primal, a 100% pure acrylic resin in water dispersion that is completely reversible, with a very thin brush.
Once placed back in its place, the Tondo Doni, barring any other needs, will remain there for the next 18 months. That work is a cornerstone of world painting: an absolute masterpiece that marked the watershed between a before and an after.
In the Rai service made for the occasion, however, it is written down in black and white and even said in the video that the Tondo Doni is a work on canvas: oh no. It is a tempera grassa painting on wood and, as was the custom in the early sixteenth century in Florence, I spread a thick preparatory layer of glue and plaster over it and then I carried out the priming with lead white and oily binder.
A little more attention from the public service seems necessary to me, especially in the year in which we celebrate the 550th anniversary of my birth.
