Sono 250 circa le navi naufragate nelle acque portoghesi che giacciono sul fondale marino ancora piene di tesori.

L’archeologo Alexandre Monteiro al momento ha identificato un numero di 8.620 navi sui fondali del Portogallo e stima siano ben 250 quelle che ancora custodiscano tesori straordinari che non sono stati mai recuperati.

Le navi si trovano sia lungo la costa continentale del Paese che attorno agli arcipelaghi delle Azzorre e di Madeira, nell’Oceano Atlantico.

Il ricercatore dell’università di Lisbona Monteiro ha reso noti i dati dei suoi studi riuscendo a mettere nero su bianco un elenco dettagliato di tutte le navi naufragate in quelle acque e alcune risalgono addirittura al 1500.

“Ho registrato circa 7.500 naufragi lungo la costa del Portogallo continentale, 1.000 vicino all’arcipelago delle Azzorre e altri 120 vicino all’isola di Madeira – afferma Monteiro all’agenzia stampa Llosa- “per esempio, vicino alla costa di Troy, c’è una nave spagnola chiamata Nostra Signora del Rosario risalente al 1589. Ne ho controllato la storia in dettaglio, conosco persino il nome della madre del capitano. I registri ufficiali indicano che la nave trasportava 22 tonnellate di oro e argento.

Sappiamo per certo che ci sono 250 navi del tesoro sui fondali marini e, prima o poi, attività estrattive o simili ne porteranno alla luce una. Ma il fatto è che non esiste un piano per proteggere tali scoperte ed eventuali ritrovamenti”.

Si spera che le navi ancora sul fondo del mare non vengano saccheggiate prima di essere rinvenute, anche perché, come afferma Monteiro, la maggior parte di queste imbarcazioni è sepolta sotto spessi strati di sabbia.

We know for sure that there are 250 treasure ships on the seabed and, sooner or later, mining or similar activities will bring one to light. But the fact is that there is no plan to protect such discoveries and possible finds.”

Hopefully the ships still at the bottom of the sea will not be looted before being found, also because, as Monteiro states, most of these vessels are buried under thick layers of sand.
