L’opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è l’Adorazione dei pastori dipinta da Jacopo Bassano, appartenente alla Galleria Borghese.

L’olio su tela fu eseguito dall’artista nel momento della sua piena maturità ed è stato datato attorno al 1550. Un Bambino accigliato mostrato nudo dalla Madre come prefigurazione dell’Eucarestia, guarda perplesso l’agnello che gli si avvicina.

Bassano suggerisce simbolicamente il destino che spetta al nuovo Nato, mostrando che sarà proprio Lui a divenire agnello sacrificale per salvare l’umanità tutta.

Sta tutta lì infatti la spiegazione dello sguardo turbato del Bambino, nel vedere ciò che accadrà quando diventerà adulto.

L’Adorazione dei pastori di Bassano riprende il Vangelo di Luca, quando narra che alcuni pastori, informati da un angelo della nascita di Cristo, accorrono al cospetto del Bambino per rendergli omaggio.

Il contesto generale è bucolico e si vedono bene il bue e l’asinello sulla sinistra.

La posa sinuosa della Vergine sembra ispirata dalle opere del Parmigianino che era solito dipingere figure allungate con questo stile etereo.

La provenienza del dipinto è nota ed è documentato per la prima volta nella raccolta del cardinale Girolamo Bernerio come ‘Quadro di Nostro Signore Natività con cornice del Bassano scudi otto’.

Fu poi donato dallo stesso Bernerio nel 1611 a Scipione Borghese che lo aggiunse alla sua preziosa quadreria che aveva allestito al casino di Porta Pinciana.

Bassano’s Adoration of the Shepherds takes up the Gospel of Luke, when it tells that some shepherds, informed by an angel of the birth of Christ, rush to the presence of the Child to pay homage to him.

The sinuous pose of the Virgin seems inspired by the works of Parmigianino who used to paint elongated figures in this ethereal style.

The provenance of this painting is known and is documented for the first time in the collection of Cardinal Girolamo Bernerio as ‘Painting of Our Lord Nativity with a Bassano frame, eight scudi’.

It was then donated by Bernerio himself in 1611 to Scipione Borghese who added it to his precious collection of paintings that he had set up at the Casino di Porta Pinciana.
