L’opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è l’Adorazione del Bambino dipinta in affresco dal Beato Angelico tra il 1440 e il 1441 circa nel convento di San Marco, a Firenze.

L’Angelico trascorse diversi anni a decorare il convento su commissione di Cosimo de’ Medici, il pater patriae. Per lui dipingere equivaleva a pregare e si narra che quando mise mano alla Crocifissione, la dipinse inginocchiato piangendo per quasi tutto il tempo.

Molto probabilmente in questo affresco c’è la mano anche di un altro artista, il cosiddetto maestro della cella 2.

Al centro della composizione c’è Gesù Bambino, circondato da figure in adorazione. La Vergine Maria, con un’espressione di tenera devozione, a mani giunte e in ginocchio guarda il Figlio che ricambia quell’intenso e amorevole sguardo.

San Giuseppe, anziano e barbuto, abbigliato come da tradizione con l’abito viola e il mantello giallo, pare avere le sopracciglia aggrottate.

Ai due estremi dell’opera si vedono Santa Caterina d’Alessandria e San Pietro Martire. Lo sfondo semplice della capanna, con le due figure del bue e dell’asinello, accentrano l’attenzione proprio sul Bambino, fulcro dell’affresco.

L’Adorazione del Bambino dell’Angelico non è una decorazione della cella fine a se stessa ma doveva ispirare la meditazione dei frati.

L’atmosfera di contemplazione caratterizza l’opera posizionata nella cella 5 del corridoio Est, con quella luce soffusa.

Christmas works: the Adoration of the Child by Beato Angelico

The Christmas work I propose to you today is the Adoration of the Child painted in fresco by Beato Angelico between 1440 and 1441 approximately in the convent of San Marco, in Florence.

Angelico spent several years decorating the convent on commission from Cosimo de’ Medici, the pater patriae. For him, painting was equivalent to praying and it is said that when he began to paint the Crucifixion, he painted it kneeling and crying for almost the entire time.

Most likely, this fresco also features the hand of another artist, the so-called master of cell 2.

At the center of the composition is Baby Jesus, surrounded by figures in adoration. The Virgin Mary, with an expression of tender devotion, with clasped hands and on her knees, looks at her Son who returns that intense and loving gaze.

Saint Joseph, old and bearded, dressed as per tradition with the purple suit and the yellow cloak, seems to have furrowed eyebrows.

At the two ends of the work you can see Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Saint Peter Martyr. The simple background of the hut, with the two figures of the ox and the donkey, focus the attention on the Child, the fulcrum of the fresco.

The Adoration of the Child by Angelico is not a decoration of the cell in itself but was intended to inspire the meditation of the friars.

The atmosphere of contemplation characterizes the work, with that diffused light and a wise use of colors. The fresco in question is located in cell 5 of the East corridor.
