“La Libertà che guida il popolo” di Eugène Delacroix come non l’avete mai vista prima: terminato il restauro
E’ giunto a termine il restauro del dipinto più iconico del Louvre, dopo la Gioconda, divenuto simbolo universale del riscatto e dell’autonomia.
“La Libertà che guida il popolo” di Eugène Delacroix, dopo sei mesi di restauro, da ottobre 2023 ad aprile 2024, condotto da Bénédicte Trémolières e Laurence Mugniot è arrivato alla fine restituendo all’opera una maggiore leggibilità.
L’accurato assottigliamento dei pesanti strati di vernice ossidata e sporca che soffocavano la tavolozza di colori adoperata da Delacroix sarà apprezzabile dal vivo a partire dal 2 maggio.
La Libertà che guida il popolo ha ritrovato brillantezza, freschezza e l’armonia coloristica originale specifica di Delacroix.
Fin dalla sua creazione, quasi due secoli fa, la forza espressiva di questo capolavoro è divenuta il simbolo di numerose lotte di liberazione che hanno avuto luogo in tutto il mondo.
Eugène Delacroix ha effettuato un’originale giustapposizione di colori per modellare volumi, mostrare stati d’animo e organizzare i diversi piani di lettura. Trasparenze e texture differenti nella stesura del colore creano un insieme vibrante, armonico e tutt’altro che statico.
Mentre i pesanti strati di vernice occultavano i contrasti vigorosi e l’illusione tridimensionale delle varie figure presenti nell’opera, il restauro consente di distinguere di nuovo gli uni dagli altri tutti i protagonisti del dipinto.
Adesso per esempio si vede nettamente il bambino armato di pistole, talvolta soprannominato Gavroche, che corre davanti alla Libertà e non al suo fianco come sembrava prima.
Nemmeno la scarpa in cuoio usurata che pare abbandonata nell’angolo in basso a sinistra prima del restauro era apprezzabile.
La sorpresa principale è stata la tunica della Libertà che si pensava fosse di un giallo uniforme fino al momento.
Nel corso di un primo test effettuato in fondo all’abito, si è rivelata essere invece di un bel grigio chiaro.
In pratica Delacroix ha dipinto l’intero vestito color grigio, prima di aggiungere il giallo brillante in zone ben precise come quella immediatamente sotto il seno e della parte superiore delle gambe.

The restoration of the most iconic painting in the Louvre, after the Mona Lisa, which has become a universal symbol of redemption and autonomy, has been completed.
“Liberty Leading the People” by Eugène Delacroix, after six months of restoration, from October 2023 to April 2024, conducted by Bénédicte Trémolières and Laurence Mugniot, has arrived at the end, restoring greater readability to the work.
The careful thinning of the heavy layers of oxidized and dirty paint that suffocated the color palette used by Delacroix will be appreciated in person starting from May 2nd.
Liberty Leading the People has rediscovered brilliance, freshness and the original color harmony specific to Delacroix.
Since its creation, almost two centuries ago, the expressive power of this masterpiece has become the symbol of numerous liberation struggles that have taken place throughout the world.
Eugène Delacroix created an original juxtaposition of colors to model volumes, show moods and organize the different reading levels. Different transparencies and textures in the application of color create a vibrant, harmonious and anything but static whole.
While the heavy layers of paint hid the vigorous contrasts and the three-dimensional illusion of the various figures present in the work, the restoration allows all the protagonists of the painting to be distinguished from each other again.
Now, for example, we clearly see the child armed with guns, sometimes nicknamed Gavroche, running in front of Liberty and not alongside him as it seemed before.
Not even the worn leather shoe that appears abandoned in the lower left corner before the restoration was appreciable.
The main surprise was the Liberty tunic which was thought to be a uniform yellow until now.
During an initial test carried out on the bottom of the dress, it turned out to be a nice light grey. In practice, Delacroix painted the entire dress grey, before adding bright yellow in very specific areas such as immediately under the breasts and the upper part of the legs.
