La Scultura del giorno: Lady Godiva di Jhon Thomas
La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è Lady Godiva realizzata dallo scultore inglese Jhon Thomas in marmo e gesso nel 1861.
Thomas scelse come soggetto la protagonista di una nota leggenda medievale inglese. Orbene, attorno all’anno mille il popolo del regno di Coventry non riusciva più a pagare le tasse sempre più salate imposte dal conte Leofrico.
La moglie Lady Godiva chiedeva ripetutamente al marito di non essere così esoso e di abbassare quelle imposte. Le persone non riuscivano nemmeno più a mangiare per corrispondere cifre assurde al regno.
Il conte disse alla moglie che avrebbe abbassato le tasse sei lei avesse cavalcato nuda per le strade della contea.
Lady Godiva non ci pensò due volte, sellò il cavallo e partì senza vesti percorrendo le strade di Coventry. Prima di partire però aveva mandato un messaggio a tutti gli abitanti dicendo di non uscire di casa e raccontando ciò che si apprestava a fare per il bene del popolo.
Nessuno la vide cavalcare nuda eccetto un sarto Peeping Tom che rimase accecato da quella visione angelica.
Questa leggenda, grazie al poema Godiva di Tennyson, ritornò in grande auge nell’Ottocento.
L’artista proposte per la prima volta l’opera al pubblico nel 1861, presso l’Accademia Reale Inglese.
L’anno successivo sua moglie donò la Lady Godiva al Museo di Maidstone, nel Kent, dove tutt’oggi si trova.
La scultura è a grandezza naturale e mostra la giovane donna completamente nuda, ricurva su sé stessa. Quel gesto fatto per far abbassare le imposte non viene proposto con fierezza ma quasi con vergogna dall’artista.
Fate caso proprio alla posizione del corpo di Lady Godiva e al volto mesto che tenta di nascondere dagli sguardi altrui.
Addirittura prova a celarsi dietro i lunghi capelli che sappiamo dalla leggenda essere dorati, intrecciati in parte. Lo sconforto di Godiva è totale e nonostante fosse celebrata come un’eroina, non ha niente nel suo atteggiamento di baldanzoso ed eroico.
La nudità così esibita la mette a disagio e se ne vergogna.
Il cavallo scolpito da Jhon Thomas invece mostra fiero il petto e ha la testa protesa. Le redini finemente lavorate e la criniera mossa dal vento sono straordinarie.
Sulle gambe e sul muso le vene sono rigonfie di sangue, come accade nei cavalli in corsa o tesi.

The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is Lady Godiva created by the English sculptor Jhon Thomas in marble and plaster in 1861.
Thomas chose as his subject the protagonist of a well-known medieval English legend. Well, around the year one thousand the people of the kingdom of Coventry were no longer able to pay the increasingly high taxes imposed by Count Leofrico.
His wife Lady Godiva repeatedly asked her husband not to be so greedy and to lower those taxes. People couldn’t even eat anymore but they had to pay absurd amounts to the kingdom.
The earl told his wife that he would lower her taxes if she rode naked throughout the kingdom.
Lady Godiva didn’t think twice, she saddled the horse and set off without clothes along the streets of Coventry. Before leaving, however, she had sent a message to all the inhabitants saying not to leave the house and telling what she was preparing to do for the good of the people.
No one saw her riding naked except a Peeping Tom tailor who was blinded by that angelic vision of her.
This legend, thanks to Tennyson’s poem Goduva, made a comeback in the 19th century. The artist presented the work to the public for the first time in 1861, at the Royal English Academy.
The following year, his wife donated the Lady Godiva to the Maidstone Museum, Kent, where it remains to this day.
The sculpture is life-size and shows the young woman completely naked, bent over on herself. That gesture made to lower the taxes is not proposed with pride but almost with shame by the artist.
Pay attention to the position of Lady Godiva’s body and to her sad face that she tries to hide from the gazes of others.
She even tries to hide behind her long hair that we know from legend to be golden, partially braided. Godiva’s despair is total and although she was celebrated as a heroine, she has nothing bold and heroic in her attitude.
Her nakedness so exhibited makes her uncomfortable and ashamed.
The horse sculpted by John Thomas, on the other hand, proudly displays its chest and has its head stretched out. The finely crafted reins and the windblown mane are extraordinary.
On the legs and muzzle the veins are engorged with blood, as occurs in running or tense horses.
