Ebbi modo di incontrare per la prima volta Vittoria Colonna nel 1531, quando già era vedova di Ferrante Francesco d’Avalos da sei anni circa.

Da allora la nostra amicizia divenne ogni giorno più forte e indissolubile fino a quando purtroppo la marchesa passò a miglior vita.

Orbene, nell’estate del 1531, grazie alla mediazione del cugino Alfonso d’Avalos, Vittoria riuscì ad avere due capolavori: uno da Tiziano e uno da me.

Il dipinto di Tiziano oggi perduto riguardava la Maddalena Penitente mentre da me ebbe un cartone con l’episodio del vangelo del Noli me Tangere.

Anche il cartone mio con la Maddalena che si avvicina a Cristo risorto è andato perduto ma se oggi potete avere un’idea di come potesse essere, grazie a numerose derivazioni.

A Casa Buonarroti è esposta presumibilmente la tavola che io stesso feci dipingere al Pontormo sulla base del mio cartone.

Racconta il Vasari che il dipinto di Pontormo tanto piacque al capitano della guardia di Firenze Alessandro Vitelli, che ne volle commissionare un’altra copia all’artista prima che Alfonso d’Avalos si recasse a Firenze per prelevare l’opera per farla avere alla cugina Vittoria Colonna.

Entrambe le tavole sono tutt’oggi esistenti: una è quella di Casa Buonarroti e l’altra appartiene a una collezione privata ubicata in provincia di Varese.

I had the opportunity to meet Vittoria Colonna for the first time in 1531, when she had already been the widow of Ferrante Francesco d’Avalos for about six years.

Since then our friendship with her grew stronger and indissoluble every day until unfortunately the marquise passed away.

Well, in the summer of 1531, thanks to the mediation of her cousin Alfonso d’Avalos, she managed to have two masterpieces: one by Titian and one by me. The now lost painting by Titian was about the Penitent Magdalene, while he got a cartoon from me with the episode from the Gospel of Noli me Tangere.

Even my cartoon with the Magdalene approaching the risen Christ has been lost but if today you can have an idea of how it could be, thanks to numerous derivations.

At Casa Buonarroti there is presumably the panel that I myself had Pontormo paint based on my cartoon.

Vasari recounts that the captain of the Florentine guard Alessandro Vitelli liked that painting by Pontormo so much that he too wanted to commission another copy from Pontormo before Alfonso d’Avalos went to Florence to collect the work to have it at the cousin Vittoria Colonna.

Both panels still exist today: one is that of Casa Buonarroti and the other belongs to a private collection located in the province of Varese.
