Negli studi che realizzai per la volta della Sistina, la punizione di Aman è l’episodio al quale è collegato il maggior numero di miei disegni, sopravvissuti al tempo e ai miei roghi.

Questo che vi propongo è proprio uno studio relativo a quel pennacchio angolare in cui affrescai le sorti del visir. Aman viene citato nel Libro di Ester della Bibbia. Il re persiano Assuero lo aveva nominato visir ma lui non si fece tanti scrupoli e tentò di sterminare l’intero popolo ebraico. Il re non ebbe nessuna pietà per lui e lo uccise.

Nel pennacchio lo feci crocifiggere ma nella Bibbia Aman viene fatto morire per impiccagione. Non è che non conoscessi a menadito quella storia ma preferii di fare un chiaro parallelismo con la crocifissione di Cristo.

Il fatto che la scena riprodotta l’abbia tanto studiata attraverso diversi disegni, rende questo foglio che vi propongo ancora più prezioso.

Lo studio dell’uomo che sta leggendo è quello per la figura che compare in secondo piano, dietro il re Assuero semi disteso mentre gli studi di braccia e mani sono relativi al braccio destro del re che indica Aman nell’altra stanza.

Come vedete anche le figure meno importanti del pennacchio le studiai a lungo e gli dedicati tempo e dedizione.

The man reading while Haman is being crucified
