La malinconia che pervade le opere mie
Avete mai fatto caso a quella malinconia che pare pervadere l’intimo di molte mie opere? Molti disegni, sculture e affreschi hanno volti permeati da uno stato d’animo di vaga tristezza che traspare dalla posa, dall’atteggiamento e dallo sguardo.
Alcuni ignudi della volta della Sistina, la Madonna del Giudizio Universale che si rannicchia alla destra di Cristo Giudice così come tutte le altre mie Madonne, lo Schiavo Barbuto ma anche la Vita Attiva nota anche come la Lia della Tomba di Giulio II hanno questa peculiarità.
La lista è lunga, certo: era giusto per proporvi qualche esempio di quante opere mie siano caratterizzate da una malinconia che pare non abbandonarle.
Pensate anche al disegno della Testa della Leda di Casa Buonarroti, con lo sguardo rivolto verso il basso o alla Notte della Sagrestia Nuova: tutti capolavori assoluti che hanno in comune proprio quel senso di scoramento percettibile che pare al contempo mettere in moto i pensieri.
A mio avviso quell’atteggiamento non era altro che il riflesso dell’animo mio. In fin dei conti son sempre stato così per tutto il corso della vita, profondamente malinconico.
Scrissi anche in un celebre sonetto che la mia allegrezza era la malinconia:
…La mia allegrezz’ è la maninconia,
e ‘l mio riposo son questi disagi:
che chi cerca il malanno, Dio gliel dia...

The melancholy that pervades my works
Have you ever noticed that melancholy that seems to pervade the depths of many of my works? Many drawings, sculptures and frescoes have faces permeated by a mood of vague sadness that transpires from the pose, the attitude and the look.
Some naked of the Sistine vault, the Madonna of the Last Judgment who huddles to the right of Christ the Judge as well as all my other Madonnas, the Bearded Slave but also the Active Life also known as the Lia of the Tomb of Julius II have this peculiarity.
The list is long, of course: it was right to offer you some examples of how many of my works are characterized by a melancholy that does not seem to abandon them.
Think also of the design of the Head of the Leda of Casa Buonarroti, with the gaze turned downwards or of the Night of the New Sacristy: all absolute masterpieces that have in common that sense of perceptible discouragement which at the same time seems to set thoughts in motion.
The list is long, of course: it was right to offer you some examples of how many of my works are characterized by a melancholy that does not seem to abandon them.

In my opinion, that attitude was nothing more than a reflection of my soul. After all, I’ve always been like this all my life, deeply melancholy.
I also wrote in a famous sonnet that my joy was melancholy:
…La mia allegrezz’ è la maninconia,
e ‘l mio riposo son questi disagi:
che chi cerca il malanno, Dio gliel dia...
