Giacobbe
Questo vecchio barbuto con quello sguardo a metà fra il preoccupato e l’incuriosito è Giacobbe. Lo affrescai nella volta della Sistina assieme agli altri antenati di Cristo.
Prima del restauro la lunetta in questione era assai deturpata dalle salificazioni causate delle infiltrazioni d’acqua piovana che c’erano state nel corso degli anni precedenti. Ciò nonostante lo strato di pittura a buon fresco non ha subito importanti distacchi o altri danni irrecuperabili.
Sapete, l’intera lunetta, che a dirla tutta non è proprio piccina, la dipinsi in soli tre giorni come d’altro canto tutte le altre.
Se guardate bene il personaggio noterete che le parti in primo piano come il naso, la fronte e un ginocchio le dipinsi con una fitta tessitura di pennellate decise.
Per le parti che invece rimangono dietro, preferii usare pennellate molto più fluide e larghe.
Non è affatto un caso ma bensì uno stratagemma per dare alla figura un effetto tridimensionale, ancora più visibile guardando Giacobbe da venti metri più in basso, ovvero dalla pavimentazione della Sistina.

This bearded old man is Jacob. I frescoed it in the vault of the Sistine Chapel together with the other ancestors of Christ.
Before the restoration, the bezel in question was very disfigured by the salifications caused by the infiltration of rainwater that had occurred over the previous years. In spite of this, the fresh layer of paint has not undergone major detachments or other irrecoverable damage.
You know, the entire lunette, which to be honest is not exactly small, I painted it in just three days like all the others.
If you look closely at the character you will notice that the parts in the foreground such as the nose, the forehead and one knee are painted with a dense texture of decisive brushstrokes. For the parts that remain behind, I preferred to use much smoother and wider brushstrokes.
It is not a coincidence at all but rather a stratagem to give the figure a three-dimensional effect, even more visible by looking at Jacob from twenty meters below, that is, from the Sistine paving.
