Study for a naked man
What you see is the study for the ignudo which I frescoed on the left above the Persian Sibyl, in the vault of the Sistine Chapel. Most likely it is a design that I made by looking at a live model.
I studied the position of this body in detail, analyzing every single muscle and tendon in detail. The fact is that then in the fresco rendering rendered his features less pronounced by simplifying them. I would have lost precious time in growing more accurate details than from the bottom they wouldn’t have noticed anyway.
The drawing was dated between September 1510 and August 14, 1511, at the time of the second phase of the works for the vault of the Sistine Chapel.
You know, this design also belonged to Rubens in the past while today it is kept at the Albertina Museum in Vienna
