Chi l’ha detto che ai bambini l’arte non piaccia e non li appassioni? E’ una leggenda da sfatare che non ha motivo di esistere. A volte è semplicemente il modo in cui gli adulti propongono la visita al museo che per loro diventa insostenibile, noiosa e tutt’altro che appetibile.

Invece di raccontargli per filo e per segno la storia dell’intero museo o di camminare fra le sale pensando solo a far foto e abbandonando i bambini a se stessi, guardate con loro le opere che ci sono seguendoli passo passo.

Affascinati da forme, colori e storie li vedrete perdersi in un dipinto che magari a voi ha poco da dire ma a loro racconta storie straordinarie. Dategli il tempo di assaporare di più ciò che gli piace senza strattonarli via. I loro tempi non sono quelli degli adulti: una cosa che sembra scontata ma così non è.

Forse non vorranno nemmeno vedere quella scultura che tanto affascina voi e preferiranno soffermarsi sul dettaglio di un’opera diversa ma cosa importa? Non toglietegli il piacere di ritrovarsi circondati da talmente tanti dipinti da sentirsi quasi smarriti e sculture talmente intense da poterle quasi sentire raccontare tutte le peripezie che hanno vissuto per arrivare fino ai vostri giorni.

I musei ai bambini piacciono eccome soprattutto se accompagnati da adulti innamorati la bellezza nel senso più ampio del termine. Raccontategli le storie degli artisti che hanno creato quelle sculture che a loro piacciono tanto: vi staranno a sentire eccome.

Lasciate sul tavolo di cucina libri pieni di belle foto che mostrino il mio Giudizio Universale, le Stanze di Raffaello, l’ultima cena di Leonardo ma anche con foto di sculture del Bernini, Canova, Finelli… vi sorprenderà vedere i vostri figli quanto siano interessati a guardare con attenzione quelle opere. La bellezza dell’arte non è mai fine a se stessa: apre gli occhi, il cuore e la mente.

In tempi bui c’è più bisogno di bellezza: portate i bambini nei musei.

Take the kids to the museums

Who said that children do not like art and are not passionate about them? It is a legend to debunk that has no reason to exist. Sometimes it is simply the way in which adults propose a visit to the museum which for them becomes unsustainable, boring and anything but attractive.

Instead of telling him the story of the entire museum or walking through the halls thinking only of taking pictures and leaving the children to themselves, look with them at the works that follow us step by step.

Fascinated by shapes, colors and stories, you will see them lost in a painting that maybe has little to say to you but tells them extraordinary stories. Give him time to enjoy more of what he likes without tugging them away. Their times are not those of adults: something that seems obvious but it is not.

Maybe they won’t even want to see that sculpture that so fascinates you and they will prefer to dwell on the detail of a different work but what does it matter? Do not take away the pleasure of finding yourself surrounded by so many paintings that you feel almost lost and sculptures so intense that you can almost hear them tell all the ups and downs they experienced to get to your days.

The museums like children, especially if accompanied by adults in love with beauty in the broadest sense of the word. Tell them the stories of the artists who created those sculptures that they like so much: they’ll hear you all right.

Leave on the kitchen table books full of beautiful photos showing my Last Judgment, Raphael’s Rooms, Leonardo’s last supper but also with pictures of Bernini’s sculptures, Canova, Finelli … you will be surprised to see your children interested to look carefully at those works. The beauty of art is never an end in itself: it opens the eyes, the heart and the mind.

In times more need of beauty: bring the children to the museum.
