Madonna, Charity or Sibyl?
The drawing you see below belongs to the collection of the British Museum. It has been interpreted as the representation of a prophet or a sibyl together with a putto until at least 1953. On the sheet are visible wall moldings of frames and it has been dated around 1520-1525. This theory, however, does not convince all the experts unanimously while the fact that it is my work is not in any way questioned.
While the critics prior to the Wilde linked it directly to the decoration of the Sistine vault, Wilde hypothesized instead it was not a study but a finished drawing also because it is really difficult to bring it back to the prophets or the sibyls that I frescoed.
The elongated figure is more similar to the figures I sculpted for the New Sacristy. According to Tolnay it is a female figure, comparable to a Madonna and Child or to the classic allegory of Charity which protects the child with the mantle of Mercy.
