La Natività di Noël Nicolas Coypel è un’interpretazione figurata molto delicata e spirituale del Natale con la nascita di Cristo. Custodita al Musée des Beaux-Arts in Francia, il dipinto a olio su tela è frutto dei suoi tempi, on quell’eleganza e raffinatezza tipica della scuola settecentesca francese dell’epoca.

Un artista tra tradizione e innovazione

Figlio del celebre pittore Noël Coypel, direttore dell’Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture e primo pittore del re Luigi XIV, Noël Nicolas Coypel nacque nel 1690 in un ambiente in cui l’arte era parte integrante della vita quotidiana.

La sua formazione artistica venne molto influenzata dal linguaggio accademico del padre ma con il passate degli anni l’artista riuscì a rielaborarlo in chiave del tutto intima e personale, tendendo ben riconoscibili le sue opere attraverso uno stile unico.

Coypel si distinse dai contemporanei per la raffinatezza nella scelta delle cromie, in netto contrato con il rigore delle cromie.

L’opera della Nativité di Coypel

Nella sua Nativité, Coypel diede forma con i pennelli a una scena composta e raccolta che si svolge in un’atmosfera di devozione e quiete.

Al centro della scena c’è la Madonna con il volto rischiarato dalla luce emanata dal piccolo Gesù appena venuto al mondo. La Madre sostiene tra le braccia il Figlio mentre San Giuseppe, tradizionalmente abbigliato di viola con il manto coloro ocra, contempla entrambi.

In secondo piano due eteree figure angeliche; una vestita di celeste come celeste è il cielo e l’altra di verde speranza, guardano il Creatore che s’è fatto Creatura.

An Artist Between Tradition and Innovation

Son of the renowned painter Noël Coypel, director of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture and first painter to King Louis XIV, Noël Nicolas Coypel was born in 1690 into an environment where art was an integral part of daily life.

His artistic training was heavily influenced by his father’s academic language, but over the years the artist succeeded in reworking it in a highly intimate and personal manner, making his works easily recognizable through a unique style.

Coypel’s Nativité

In his Nativité, Coypel created a composed and intimate scene with his brushes, unfolding in an atmosphere of devotion and tranquility.

At the center of the scene is the Madonna, her face illuminated by the light emanating from the newborn baby Jesus. The Mother holds her Son in her arms while Saint Joseph, traditionally dressed in purple with an ochre cloak, contemplates them both.

In the background, two ethereal angelic figures; one dressed in blue, like the sky, and the other in hopeful green, gaze at the Creator who became a Creature.
