L’opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è l’Adorazione dei Magi realizzata tra il 1600 e il 1605 a olio su tela dal pittore pisano Aurelio Lomi.

Il dipinto venne realizzato per la chiesa di San Domenico a Biella ma oggi è custodito nella Galleria Sabauda di Torino.

Entrò a far parte delle raccolte torinesi attorno alla metà dell’Ottocento, quando la chiesa biellese era ormai stata soppressa e i gli arredi dispersi.

In origine, la grande tela decorava l’altare della cappella della nobile famiglia Dal Pozzo. Numerose testimonianze antiche ricordano che la cappella dell’Epifania, appartenente ai Dal Pozzo, ospitava proprio l’opera di Lomi.

Come nacque il rapporto tra il pittore pisano e i committenti biellesi

Una prima ipotesi rimanda al nome di Carlo Antonio Dal Pozzo, arcivescovo di Pisa dal 1582 al 1607, che avrebbe potuto conoscere direttamente Lomi.

Più probabilmente, però, a commissionare la pala fu il nipote Amedeo Dal Pozzo che, secondo documenti d’archivio, volle far rifare l’altare di San Domenico, dotandolo di una nuova e costosa ancona. Un incarico così prestigioso ben si addiceva a un artista affermato come il Lomi.

Nel corso dell’Ottocento, con la soppressione degli ordini religiosi voluta dal governo francese, la chiesa fu sconsacrata e trasformata in un lanificio. Fu proprio in quel momento che il dipinto arrivò a Torino.

Il dipinto del Lomi è molto affine all’Adorazione dei Magi della chiesa di San Frediano a Pisa (1604) e all’Adorazione dei pastori di Vignale presso Lucca (1601), realizzate dal medesimo artista.

Bisogna dire che il Lomi ebbe modo di apprezzare dal vero le opere di Luca Cambiaso a Genova, maestro del colore e della costruzione della scena, da cui trasse spunti compositivi importanti.

Christmas Works: Lomi’s Adoration of the Magi

The Christmas work I’m featuring today is the Adoration of the Magi, created between 1600 and 1605 in oil on canvas by the Pisan painter Aurelio Lomi.

The painting was created for the church of San Domenico in Biella but is now housed in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin. It entered Turin’s collections around the mid-19th century, when the Biella church had been suppressed and its furnishings dispersed.

Originally, the large canvas decorated the altar of the chapel of the noble Dal Pozzo family. Numerous ancient testimonies record that the Chapel of the Epiphany, belonging to the Dal Pozzo family, housed Lomi’s work.

How the relationship between the Pisan painter and his Biella patrons began

A first hypothesis points to Carlo Antonio Dal Pozzo, Archbishop of Pisa from 1582 to 1607, who may have known Lomi directly.

More likely, however, the altarpiece was commissioned by his nephew Amedeo Dal Pozzo who, according to archival documents, wanted to redo the altar of San Domenico, equipping it with a new and expensive altarpiece. Such a prestigious commission was well-suited to an established artist like Lomi.

During the 19th century, with the suppression of religious orders by the French government, the church was deconsecrated and converted into a wool mill. It was precisely at this time that the painting arrived in Turin.

Lomi’s painting is very similar to the Adoration of the Magi in the church of San Frediano in Pisa (1604) and the Adoration of the Shepherds in Vignale near Lucca (1601), both painted by the same artist.

It must be said that Lomi had the opportunity to appreciate the works of Luca Cambiaso in Genoa, a master of color and scene construction, from whom he drew important compositional inspiration.
