In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, avvenuta in quel di Caprese il 6 marzo del 1475, vi propongo un dipinto in cui io vengo ritratto mentre sono nelle cave di Carrara a cercar marmi.

Fu Annibale Gatti, l’artista nato a Forlì nel 1827 e morto a Firenze nel 1909, a dipingere quest’olio su tela firmando l’opera in basso a destra.

Nell’opera l’artista dipinse i buoi mentre trasportano un carico di marmi. A lato si vede un gruppo di giovani che stanno guardando un librone in cui annotai presumibilmente le dimensioni e le forme dei blocchi da estrarre.

Alle loro spalle ci sono io che scruto un blocco mentre due persone che lo stanno misurando con una corda.

Tutt’attorno si vedono le montagne che fanno da sfondo e cornice all’opera.

Il dipinto in questione appartiene a una collezione privata.

Michelangelo 550: Me at the Quarries in Gatti’s Painting

On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, which occurred in Caprese on March 6, 1475, I present a painting in which I am portrayed while I am in the Carrara quarries searching for marble.

Annibale Gatti, the artist born in Forlì in 1827 and died in Florence in 1909, painted this oil on canvas, signing the work in the lower right corner.

In the work, the artist depicted oxen carrying a load of marble. To the side, a group of young people are looking at a large book in which I presumably noted the dimensions and shapes of the blocks to be quarried.

Behind them, I am holding a block and two people measuring it with a rope.

All around, the mountains that form the backdrop and frame of the work are visible.

The painting in question belongs to a private collection.
