Oggi 29 dicembre, papa Francesco aprirà la Porta Santa della basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, dopo aver inaugurato il Giubileo2025 con l’apertura di quella della Basilica di San Pietro e, pochi giorni fa, quella del Carcere di Rebibbia.

La cerimonia avrà inizio alle ore 10, alla presenza del Cardinale Vicario per la diocesi di Roma Baldassarre Reina. 

La Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano è “Omnium Urbis et Orbis Ecclesiarum Mater et Caput” cioè “Madre e Capo di tutte le Chiese della Città e del Mondo”. La cerimonia dell’apertura di questa mattina darà infatti il via alle celebrazioni giubilari in tutte le altre diocesi del mondo.

Non è una giornata qualsiasi domenica 29 dicembre ma bensì quella che la chiesa dedica alla Festa della Santa Famiglia di Gesù, Maria e Giuseppe.

La storia della Porta Santa di San Giovanni in Laterano

Quella di San Giovanni in Laterano è una Porta Santa importante. Fu dichiarata tale a partire dal 1423 e adoperata per la prima volta proprio nel medesimo Anno Santo indetto da Papa Martino V.

La Porta Santa originale nel corso dei secoli è stata sostituita e oggi è quella realizzata dallo scultore di Varese Floriano Bodini, inaugurata in occasione del Giubileo del 2000 indetto da papa Giovanni Paolo II.

L’artista impiegò due anni e mezzo per portarla a termine e fonderla in bronzo. Raffigura la Madonna con il bambino, il Cristo Crocifisso e lo stemma papale. Per dar forma alla Porta Santa, lo scultore volle trarre ispirazione dal portale centrale di San Giovanni in Laterano che risale ai tempi dell’antica Roma anche se poi fu ampliata proprio da Borromini su commissione di Papa Chigi.

Jubilee2025: the Holy Door opens in St. John Lateran on December 29

The history of the Holy Door of San Giovanni in Laterano

The Holy Door of San Giovanni in Laterano is an important Holy Door. It was declared as such starting from 1423 and was used for the first time in the Holy Year proclaimed by Pope Martin V.

The original Holy Door has been replaced over the centuries and today it is the one created by the sculptor from Varese Floriano Bodini, inaugurated on the occasion of the Jubilee of 2000 proclaimed by Pope John Paul II.

The artist took two and a half years to complete it and cast it in bronze. It depicts the Madonna with the child, the Crucified Christ and the papal coat of arms.
