L’opera del giorno: la Carità di Paul Dubois
L’opera del giorno che vi propongo oggi è la Carità realizzata dallo scultore Paul Dubois nel periodo compreso tra il 1902 e il 1911.
Questa volta non si tratta di una scultura in marmo ma di una raffinatissima porcellana biscuit appartenente al Musée d’Orsay di Parigi.
L’opera fu modellata da Dubois e poi fatta realizzare dalla Manifattura nazionale di Sèvres, una delle più celebri manifatture europee di porcellana che aveva la sua sede nell’omonima città francese.
Il termine biscuit indica che la porcellana viene cotta due volte a una temperatura di circa 1300°C senza lo strato di lucido. Viene realizzata con una grana tenera di caolino sottile e puro che gli conferisce un aspetto molto simile a quello del marmo.
La Carità mostrata come una madre che allatta i figli o comunque li tiene fra le braccia è un tema ricorrente nel mondo dell’arte.
Dubois volle rappresentare la donna con il capo coperto da un fazzoletto che appare stanca mentre tiene in grembo un figlio che dorme beatamente probabilmente dopo aver poppato e l’altro che continua ad alimentarsi dal seno della madre.

Work of the day: Charity by Paul Dubois
The work of the day that I propose to you today is Charity created by the sculptor Paul Dubois in the period between 1902 and 1911.
This time it is not a marble sculpture but a very refined biscuit porcelain belonging to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
The work was modeled by Dubois and then made by the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, one of the most famous European porcelain manufacturers that had its headquarters in the French city of the same name.
The term biscuit indicates that the porcelain is fired twice at a temperature of about 1300°C without the layer of polish. It is made with a soft grain of thin and pure kaolin that gives it an appearance very similar to that of marble.
Charity shown as a mother breastfeeding her children or holding them in her arms is a recurring theme in the world of art.
Dubois wanted to represent the woman with her head covered by a handkerchief who appears tired while holding a child in her lap who is sleeping blissfully probably after having breastfed and the other who continues to feed from the mother’s breast.
