Le Opere del Natale: l’Adorazione dei pastori di Luca Giordano
L’Opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è l’Adorazione dei pastori dipinta a olio su tela da Luca Giordano nel 1688, oggi custodita presso il Museo del Louvre.
Il dipinto fu realizzato dal produttivo artista napoletano per essere collocata probabilmente all’interno della camera da letto della regina, nel palazzo Reale di Madrid.
Luca Giordano dipinse al centro della scena la Vergine avvolta in un manto celeste, come tradizione vuole, mentre mostra il Bambino ai pastori che arrivano alla grotta per rendergli omaggio.
Il Bambino è adagiato sul manto della Madre, sistemato fra Lui e il pagliericcio sottostante. In piedi a destra, in posizione più defilata, si vede l’anziano San Giuseppe che rivolge il suo sguardo verso i pastori e appoggia le mani sopra il bastone dinanzi a lui.
Il cielo sopra la Sacra Famiglia si squarcia lasciando passare un nugolo di angioletti e un fascio di luce che inonda la Madre e il Figlio.
Il gruppo di pastori in adorazione sembra arrivare di corsa al cospetto del Bambino e alcuni di loro portano doni contadini come un cesto di uova tenuto fra le mani da un bambino e un cesto di vivande che una donna porta sul capo.
Davanti a Gesù Bambino, accovacciato a terra, si nota la presenza di un agnellino che rimanda col pensiero al ruolo di agnello sacrificale che avrà poi Cristo negli anni a seguire.

The Works of Christmas: the Adoration of the Shepherds by Luca Giordano
The Christmas work that I propose to you today is the Adoration of the Shepherds painted in oil on canvas by Luca Giordano in 1688, now kept in the Louvre Museum.
The painting was created by the productive Neapolitan artist to probably be placed inside the queen’s bedroom, in the Royal Palace of Madrid.
Luca Giordano painted the Virgin wrapped in a celestial mantle at the center of the scene, as tradition dictates, while showing the Child to the shepherds who arrive at the cave to pay homage to him.
The Child is lying on the Mother’s mantle, positioned between Him and the straw mattress below. Standing on the right, in a more secluded position, we see the elderly Saint Joseph who turns his gaze towards the shepherds and places his hands on the staff in front of him.
The sky above the Holy Family is torn, letting a cloud of little angels pass through and a beam of light that floods the Mother and the Son.
The group of adoring shepherds seems to come running in front of the Child and some of them bring peasant gifts such as a basket of eggs held in the hands of a child and a basket of food that a woman carries on her head.
In front of Baby Jesus, crouched on the ground, we notice the presence of a little lamb which brings to mind the role of sacrificial lamb that Christ will have in the years to follow.
