Le Opere del Natale: la Natività di Bernardo Strozzi
L’opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è la Natività di Bernardo Strozzi, dipinta a olio su tela agli inizi del Seicento per un committente genovese.
L’opera riscosse un grande successo tanto che l’artista e la sua bottega ne realizzarono differenti versioni fra le quali la più celebre è quella custodita presso il Walters Art Museum di Baltimora.
Il dipinto fu realizzato fra il 1616 e il 1618 dallo Strozzi, noto anche come il Cappuccino o il Prete genovese, uno dei più importanti protagonisti del barocco genovese. L’artista era un frate cappuccino ma dopo la morte del padre avvenuta nel 1608, gli fu concesso in modo temporaneo di abbandonare l’ordine per poter mantenere la famiglia d’origine dipingendo.
Iniziò la sua carriera artistica a bottega da Pietro Sorri e, se in un primo momento la sua opera pittorica fu influenzata da quella toscana, con il passare degli anni divennero più evidenti le influenze lombarde, fiamminghe e anche caravaggesche.
La Natività di Strozzi è incentrata sullo sguardo che la Madre rivolge verso il Figlio appena venuto al mondo che ha sua volta ricambia. In primo piano si vede un pastore accorso per rendere omaggio al Salvatore con in mano un pennuto oramai morto, portato come dono.
E’ una scena tipicamente contadina in cui sembra di rivedere una nascita di un bambino di un piccolo paese al quale i vicini di casa, in questo caso i pastori, portano in dono quello che possono offrirgli.

The Works of Christmas: the Nativity by Bernardo Strozzi
The Christmas work that I propose to you today is the Nativity by Bernardo Strozzi, painted in oil on canvas at the beginning of the seventeenth century for a Genoese client.
The work was such a great success that the artist and his workshop created different versions of it, the most famous of which is the one kept at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.
The painting was created between 1616 and 1618 by Strozzi, also known as the Cappuccino or the Genoese Priest, one of the most important protagonists of the Genoese Baroque. The artist was a Capuchin friar but after his father’s death in 1608, he was temporarily allowed to abandon the order in order to support his family of origin by painting.
He began his artistic career in Pietro Sorri’s workshop and, if at first his pictorial work was influenced by his Tuscan one, over the years the Lombard, Flemish and even Caravaggio influences became more evident.
Strozzi’s Nativity is centered on the gaze that the Mother turns towards her Son who has just come into the world and who then returns her. In the foreground we see a shepherd who has come to pay homage to the Savior holding a dead bird in his hand, brought as a gift.
It is a typically peasant scene in which it seems like we are seeing the birth of a child from a small town to whom the neighbors, in this case the shepherds, bring as a gift what they can offer him.
