La Scultura del giorno: Gesù Bambino addormentato di Parodi
La scultura del giorno che vi propongo oggi è il Gesù Bambino addormentato scolpito da Filippo Parodi, allievo del Bernini e uno dei principali esponenti del barocco genovese.
Quest’opera in marmo di Carrara fu realizzata attorno al 1675, molto probabilmente su commissione del facoltoso Giovanni Luca Durazzo che avrebbe voluto posizionarla presso il suo palazzo, oggi conosciuto come il nome di Palazzo Reale di Genova.
Il Bambino riposa sopra un pagliericcio coperto da un lenzuolo e talmente è profondo il sonno che dischiude la bocca e lascia ricadere nel vuoto il braccio destro. L’aureola che con i suoi raggi risplende sotto il capo del Bimbo, suggerisce allo spettatore la sua natura divina.
Parodi ha giocato sapientemente con la luce in quest’opera creando giochi di ombre assai interessanti con il panneggio sul quale riposa Gesù Bambino.
La cosa mirabile è il trattamento diverso riservato alle superfici per consentire un grado maggiore o minore di assorbimento della luce: osservate il netto contrasto fra il corpo del Cristo levigato alla perfezione e la superficie più scabra dei capelli e del pagliericcio.
Il sonno profondo del Bambino sembra quasi preannunciare il suo destino segnato dalla morte precoce e l’abbandono completo alla volontà di Dio Padre.
Le spighe di grano sono una chiara evocazione dell’Eucarestia mentre quel panno sul quale riposa, conduce il pensiero al sudario.
La mirabile scultura di Gesù Addormentato scolpita da Filippo Parodi è stata acquistata dal Cleveland Museum of Art da Danny Katz, a Londra.

Sculpture of the day: Sleeping Child Jesus by Parodi
The sculpture of the day that I propose to you today is the sleeping Child Jesus sculpted by Filippo Parodi, a pupil of Bernini and one of the main exponents of the Genoese Baroque.
This work in Carrara marble was created around 1675, most likely commissioned by the wealthy Giovanni Luca Durazzo who wanted to place it in his palace, now known as the Royal Palace of Genoa.
The Child rests on a pallet and is so deep in sleep that he opens his mouth and lets his right arm fall into space. The halo that shines with his rays under the Child’s head suggests to the viewer his divine nature.
Parodi skilfully played with light in this work, creating very interesting shadow plays with the drapery on which the Child Jesus rests.
What is wonderful is the different treatment reserved for the surfaces to allow for a greater or lesser degree of light absorption: observe the stark contrast between the perfectly smoothed body of Christ and the rougher surface of the hair and the straw mattress.
The deep sleep of the Child almost seems to herald his destiny marked by early death and complete abandonment to the will of God the Father.
The ears of wheat are a clear evocation of the Eucharist while the cloth on which it rests leads the thought to the shroud.
The admirable sculpture of Sleeping Jesus sculpted by Filippo Parodi was acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art from Danny Katz, in London.
