La casa editrice Taschen torna a pubblicare una delle sue colossali e imperdibili monografie dedicandola a Raffaello, uno degli artisti più importanti del Rinascimento.

720 pagine in formato XXL per un peso complessivo di 5,7 chili. Insomma, un’edizione in grande formato alla quale la Taschen ci ha abituati con le precedenti monografie mie, di Leonardo da Vinci e di Caravaggio.

Fino al momento questo è il libro più completo che sia mai stato pubblicato sull’artista sia per quanto riguarda la ricchezza dei testi proposti curati da Frank Zöllner sia per l’incredibile apparato fotografico.

Raffaello, nato nel 1483 e morto prematuramente nel 1520, è considerato assieme a me e a Leonardo uno dei più importanti e influenti artisti del Rinascimento. Nel corso della sua breve ma intensa esistenza ebbe modo di realizzare un centinaio di dipinti e numerosi dipinti murali fa i quali nove serie di affreschi con soggetti differenti.

Dalla sensualità femminile ai miti antichi, dai ritratti ai cicli storici e alle scene bibliche: tutto questo è Raffaello e molto altro ancora. Creò anche intense pale d’altare e arazzi per la Cappella Sistina su commissione di papa Leone X de’ Medici e diresse la Fabbrica di San Pietro prima di me.

Fra i suoi dipinti più noti c’è sicuramente la sua Madonna Sistina con i due angioletti che guardano Santa Barbara poco sopra.

Nonostante non fummo mai colleghi in buona sintonia, non posso a distanza di secoli riconoscere la sua grandezza, soprattutto come pittore. Raffaello seppe trasformare il tema centrale della sua arte in pittura in un modo mai visto prima.

Senza dubbio le opere della maturità a Roma come gli affreschi nel Palazzo Apostolico, gli assicurarono un posto d’onore nel gotha della storia dell’arte. Non è un caso infatti se già in vita Raffaello fu celebrato come l’artista più moderno del tempo aprendo di fatto la strada al Manierismo e al Barocco.

Raphael, born in 1483 and died prematurely in 1520, is considered together with me and Leonardo one of the most important and influential artists of the Renaissance. During his short but intense existence he was able to create about a hundred paintings and numerous wall paintings including nine series of frescoes with different subjects.

He also created extensive altarpieces and tapestries for the Sistine Chapel commissioned by Pope Leo X de’ Medici and directed the Fabbrica di San Pietro before me.

Among his best known paintings of him there is certainly his Sistine Madonna with the two little angels looking at Santa Barbara just above.

Although we were never colleagues in good harmony, I cannot recognize his greatness after centuries, especially as a painter. Raphael was able to transform the central theme of his art into painting in a way never seen before.

Undoubtedly the works of maturity in Rome such as the frescoes in the Apostolic Palace ensured him a place of honor in the elite of art history. In fact, it is no coincidence that during his lifetime Raphael was celebrated as the most modern artist of the time, paving the way for Mannerism and the Baroque.
