Fra Le Opere del Natale più belle e suggestive di sempre, l’Adorazione del Bambino di Gerrit van Honthorst è una di quelle che merita un posto d’onore.

Il pittore olandese, chiamato in Italia più spesso Gherardo delle Notti, era celebre per le sue composizioni notturne rischiarate da lumi più o meno intensi. Giunse a Roma attorno al 1610 ed ebbe modo di conoscere Caravaggio e le sue opere. Senza dubbio la sua produzione artistica ne fu fortemente influenzata tanto che le scene notturne divennero la sua cifra stilistica.

Il centro della scena è occupato dal Bambin Gesù, è adagiato sopra un panno bianco, nella mangiatoia. E’ proprio il Bambino a irradiare una luce divina potentissima che illumina i volti della Madonna, dei due angeli e di San Giuseppe in secondo piano.

Addirittura la luce irradiata dal Neonato lumeggia d’oro i fili di paglia che spuntano dalla mangiatoia. Mano a mano che ci si allontana dalla visione del Bambino, la luce diventa più fievole fino a diventare buia.

Gherardo delle Notti sceglie di raffigurare pochi personaggi abbigliati in modo molto semplice per rappresentare una delle scene più rappresentative del Natale.

Tutti i personaggi presenti sono in adorazione del Bambino e lo osservano con sguardi dolcissimi e commossi. La naturalezza dei volti della Madonna e degli Angeli è sorprendente. E’ molto probabile che Gerrit van Honthorst abbia adoperato come modelli i giovanissimi garzoni di bottega per dipingere quei visi sorridenti così espressivi.

Come è arrivata questa preziosa a far parte delle collezioni della Galleria degli Uffizi? Durante il suo soggiorno in Italia, Gherardo delle Notti ebbe modo di conoscere il granduca Cosimo II de’ Medici che nel 1620 acquistò da lui diverse opere fra le quali l’Adorazione del Bambino.

The Works of Christmas: Adoration of the Child by Gerrit van Honthorst

Among the most beautiful and evocative Christmas Works of all time, the Adoration of the Child by Gerrit van Honthorst is one of those that deserves a place of honor.

The Dutch painter, more often called Gherardo delle Notti in Italy, was famous for his nocturnal compositions illuminated by more or less intense lights. He arrived in Rome around 1610 and got to know Caravaggio and his works. Undoubtedly his artistic production was strongly influenced by it, so much so that the night scenes became his stylistic signature.

The center of the scene is occupied by the Baby Jesus, he is lying on a white cloth, in the manger. It is precisely the Child who radiates a very powerful divine light that illuminates the faces of the Madonna, the two angels and St. Joseph in the background.

Gherardo delle Notti chooses to depict a few characters dressed in a very simple way to represent one of the most representative scenes of Christmas.

All the characters present are in adoration of the Child and observe him with very sweet and moved gazes. The naturalness of the faces of the Madonna and the Angels is surprising. It is very likely that Gerrit van Honthorst used the very young shop boys as models to paint those expressive smiling faces.

How did this precious item come to be part of the Uffizi Gallery collections? During his stay in Italy, Gherardo delle Notti got to know the Grand Duke Cosimo II de ‘Medici who in 1620 bought several works from him, including the Adoration of the Child.
