Entrando nel Battistero di San Giovanni a Firenze quello che si nota nell’immediato sono i mosaici che decorano la volta e gli otto lati: con la loro lucentezza attirano subito l’attenzione del visitatore e spesso non consentono di vedere ciò che si calpesta.

Ebbene, anche il pavimento è un capolavoro che val bene un’attenta osservazione. In direzione della Porta del Paradiso si può ammirare l’affascinante riquadro decorato con i dodici segni dello zodiaco. Al centro il sole attorno al quale è riportata una frase palindroma, cioè leggibile allo stesso modo in entrambi i sensi.

Cosa significa quella scritta? Riporta la dicitura EN GIRO TORTE SOL CICLOS ET ROTOR IGNE che tradotta in italiano corrente significa ECCO IO SOLE VOLGO OBLIQUAMENTE I CIRCOLI E SON VOLTO DAL FUOCO.

Queste parole invitano a pensare sull’utilità dello zodiaco che viene interpretato come una ruota del tempo. Segna il passaggio dei mesi nel corso dell’anno e il ciclo del tempo che si ripete sempre uguale di anno in anno. Non solo. In questo caso c’è anche un significato più profondo legato alla cristianità: Cristo è il sole che risorgendo come sorge ogni giorno l’astro, sconfigge il male del mondo.

Per mettere in evidenza questo significato intrinseco, ai quattro angoli più esterni dello zodiaco compaiono altrettanti grifoni che tengono fra gli artigli una serpe: il grifone è Cristo mentre il serpente simboleggia il maligno.

Prima che il Battistero avesse l’attuale lanterna e la pavimentazione fosse modificata con tanto di spostamento della lastra dello zodiaco avvenuto nel Duecento, esisteva un foro nella copertura che consentiva a un raggio di sole di penetrare all’interno il 21 giugno di ogni anno, durante il solstizio.

Quel raggio cadendo sopra lo zodiaco indicava esattamente la figura del cancro segnando così l’inizio dell’estate. Insomma, al tempo il Battistero fungeva da meridiana.

Oltre alla scritta palindroma presente al centro dello zodiaco, ne esiste un’altra più esterna sempre in latino, riportata sulla circonferenza esterna che però è arrivata fino ai giorni nostri non integra.

Tradotta ha questo significato:

Qui vengono quanti vogliono vedere cose mirabili 
e vedano quelle cose che vedute son capaci di piacere ben a ragione 
Firenze florida fornita di tutti i beni
chiese che quest’opera fosse empita delle costellazioni dei cieli
(…)
il basso pavimento mostra le insigni cose del cielo

Insomma, dopo aver guardato il pavimento così decorato bisogna rivolgerci alle insigni cose del cielo. E’ il desiderio di eternità e l’invito a contemplare la grandezza del creato che ha spinto l’umanità a creare cose grandiose.

The zodiac of the Baptistery of San Giovanni

Upon entering the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence, what you immediately notice are the mosaics that decorate the vault and the eight sides: with their brightness they immediately attract the attention of the visitor and often do not allow you to see what you step on.

Well, even the floor is a masterpiece that is well worth a careful observation. In the direction of the Gates of Paradise you can admire the fascinating square decorated with the twelve signs of the zodiac. In the center, the sun around which a palindrome phrase is shown, that is, readable in the same way in both senses.

What does that sign mean? It bears the words EN GIRO TORTE SOL CICLOS ET ROTOR IGNE which translated into current Italian means HERE I AM THE SUN OBLIQUELY TURN THE CIRCLES AND I AM FACE FROM THE FIRE.

These words invite us to think about the usefulness of the zodiac which is interpreted as a wheel of time. It marks the passage of months over the course of the year and the cycle of time that always repeats the same from year to year. Not only. In this case there is also a deeper meaning linked to Christianity: Christ is the sun who, rising as the star rises every day, defeats the evil of the world.

To highlight this intrinsic meaning in the four outermost corners of the zodiac, as many griffins appear holding a snake in their claws: the griffin is Christ while the snake symbolizes the evil one.

Before the Baptistery had the current lantern and the flooring was modified with a lot of displacement of the slab of the zodiac which took place in the thirteenth century, there was a hole in the roof that allowed a ray of sunshine to penetrate inside on June 21 of each year, during the solstice.

That ray falling above the zodiac indicated exactly the figure of Cancer, thus marking the beginning of summer. In short, at the time the Baptistery served as a sundial.

In addition to the palindrome inscription present in the center of the zodiac, there is another more external one, also in Latin, shown on the external circumference which, however, has reached the present day not intact.

Translated has this meaning:

Here come those who want to see wonderful things
and see those things which they have seen are capable of pleasing with good reason
Florence florida stocked with all assets
he asked that this work be filled with the constellations of the heavens

the low floor shows the illustrious things of heaven

In short, after having looked at the decorated floor we must turn to the illustrious things of heaven. It is the desire for eternity and the invitation to contemplate the greatness of creation that has prompted humanity to create great things.
