Oggi pomeriggio è stato battuto all’asta da Christie’s a Parigi il mio disegno giovanile inedito che realizzai probabilmente quando me ne andavo spesso a studiare dal vero i superbi affreschi di Masaccio e Masolino nella Cappella Brancacci.

La cifra è da capogiro: tenetevi forte. 23milioni di euro ed è il mio record personale per la cifra più alta che sia mai stata pagata per un mio disegno finito all’asta.

Fino al momento il disegno che ancora era in mani private che realizzai io che deteneva il record mondiale era lo Studio di Nudo Maschile che fu venduto a Londra il 4 luglio del 2000 per 12 milioni di dollari.

Il primo esperto ad attribuire il disegno a me fu Furio Rinaldi nel 2019 che al momento era in forze al dipartimento di Old Master Drawings di Christie’s. Successivamente anche Paul Joannides, professore di storia dell’arte all’Università di Cambridge e che a lungo ha studiato i miei disegni, ha avuto modo di studiare a lungo il disegno sostenendo l’importante attribuzione.

L’asta è stata aperta oggi pomeriggio alle 14:30 e si è conclusa con l’offerta di 23milioni di euro. Al momento l’identità dell’acquirente rimane riservata. Mi piacerebbe fosse stato acquistato da un museo pubblico che lo renda poi fruibile al pubblico. Certo, essendo comunque un disegno non potrà essere esposto permanentemente per ovvie ragioni conservative ma preferirei appartenesse a un museo.

Christie’s: my youth design was auctioned for 23 million euros

This afternoon, my unpublished early drawing was auctioned at Christie’s in Paris, which I probably created when I often went to study the superb frescoes by Masaccio and Masolino in the Brancacci Chapel from life.

The figure is staggering: hold on tight. 23 million euros and it is my personal best for the highest amount that has ever been paid for one of my drawings that ended up at auction.

Until now, the design that was still in private hands that I made who held the world record was the Male Nude Studio which was sold in London on July 4, 2000 for 12 million dollars.

The first expert to attribute the drawing to me was Furio Rinaldi in 2019 who was at the time in force at Christie’s Old Master Drawings department. Later Paul Joannides, professor of art history at Cambridge University and who studied my drawings for a long time, also had the opportunity to study drawing for a long time, supporting the important attribution.

The auction opened this afternoon at 2.30 pm and ended with the offer of 23 million euros. At the moment the identity of the buyer remains confidential. I wish it had been purchased by a public museum which would then make it accessible to the public. Of course, since it is still a drawing it cannot be permanently exhibited for obvious conservation reasons but I would prefer it belonged to a museum.
