6 agosto 1489: viene posata la prima pietra di Palazzo Strozzi
La storia di Palazzo Strozzi ebbe inizio il 6 agosto del 1489 di primo mattino, quando, seguendo le previsioni di un astrologo, fu posata la prima pietra.
Così Palazzo Strozzi nacque sotto il segno del Leone anche se rimane incerto l’architetto del progetto complessivo. Giuliano da San Gallo e Benedetto da Maiano fornirono a Filippo Strozzi un modello ma poi l’intero cantiere passò nelle mani del Cronaca, ovvero Simone del Pollaiolo.

Filippo Strozzi mise nero su bianco il momento della fondazione in codesto modo: “saliva sopra l’orizonte horientale il segnio del lione che è per essere segnio fisso e reale significha l’edifizio perpetuamente durare e habitazione di huomini grandi, nobili et di buon stato”.
Filippo Strozzi ambiva a costruire un prestigioso palazzo che fosse degno della sua casata. Così quando rientrò dall’esilio che gli era stato imposto da Cosimo il vecchio nel 1434, nel 1466, tornò in terra natìa e si fece in quattro per riuscire ad appropriarsi della zona più confortevole della città.
Dopo sedici anni si impossessò della zona occupata tutt’oggi dal grande palazzo che ancora abbiamo la buona ventura di vedere. Fu allora che ebbe inizio la sua edificazione.
Gli Strozzi erano una potentissima e danarosa famiglia fiorentina. Agli inizi del Quattrocento possedevano uno dei più redditizi banchi della città. Avevano importanti filiali in tutta Europa e trattavano con re e pontefici senza troppe distinzioni.
Pensate che quanto nel lontano 1343 Firenze impose una prestanza forzosa a tutte le ricche famiglie della città in proporzione al reddito, gli Strozzi furono quelli che dovettero sborsare più palanche. I Medici tirarono fuori 304 fiorini e gli Strozzi 2063.
Filippo Strozzi non ebbe modo di vedere il suo sogno concretizzato: morì prima di poter vedere l’opera conclusa. lavori poco a poco furono portati a termine e i suoi figlioli poterono andarci a vivere attorno al 1505.
Oggi Palazzo Strozzi è sede di importantissime esposizioni e mostre straordinarie come quella di qualche anno fa dedicata al Verrocchio.
