Di cartoni miei ne sono arrivati pochissimi fino ai vostri giorni. Provate a immaginare quanti ne realizzai solo per la volta della Sistina, il Giudizio Universale o per al Battaglia di Cascina: un numero grandissimo ma sono stati fagocitati dal corso del tempo e qualcuno è possibile che sia finito nei roghi appiccati in vecchiaia.

Ne esiste però uno particolarmente bello e abbastanza ben conservato che si trova al Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte a Napoli. Si tratta di uno dei cartoni realizzati per la Crocifissione di San Pietroche pensai e realizzai per papa Paolo III Farnese.

Pensate che il 13 ottobre del 1549 il papa stesso s’arrampicò sui ponteggi per vedere da vicino gli affreschi che stavo realizzando nella Cappella Paolina.

L’ambasciatore fiorentino del duca Cosimo I, Serristori, annotò quella cosa curiosa così:

“Sua Santità si trova si gagliardo, che questa mattina montò una scala a piuli per vedere le pitture che faceva il Buonarroti nella Cappella”. Insomma, adito e vitale il papa quanto lo ero io e posso dire pure che eravamo amici.

Nel cartone sopravvissuto al tempo, i tre armigeri di spalle occupano per intero la scena. Il cartone non è un foglio unico ma è formato da un insieme di diciannove fogli di carta reale bolognese incollati sopra una tela. Questo tipo di fogli li conoscevo bene e già li avevo adoperati per realizzare il cartone della Battaglia di Cascina

Infatti il cartone, per essere trasposto in questo caso con la tecnica dello spolvero, oltre ad essere bucherellato, veniva tagliato letteralmente a pezzi. Chi riuscì ad ottenere i vari pezzi che adoperai per lo spolvero, ebbe cura di rincollarli gli uni agli altri e di metterli su tela.

Sapete, questo cartone già veniva annoverato nella collezione di Fulvio Orsini che poi portò a Capodimonte. “Quadro grande incorniciato di noce, nel quale è un pezzo della storia di San Pietro della Cappella Paolina di mano di Michelangelo”. Nell’inventario come vedete ci fu un errore perché appartiene all’affresco di San Paolo ma è un dettaglio.

In fact the cardboard, in order to be transposed in this case with the dusting technique, in addition to being punctured, was literally cut into pieces. Whoever managed to obtain the various pieces that you used for dusting, took care to glue them together and put them on canvas.

You know, this cartoon has already been included in the collection of Fulvio Orsini which he then brought to Capodimonte. “Large picture framed in walnut, in which is a piece of the history of St. Peter of the Pauline Chapel by the hand of Michelangelo”. In the inventory, as you can see, there was an error because it belongs to the fresco of San Paolo but it is a detail.
