La testa barbuta del British
Oggi voglio raccontarvi un po’ di cose in merito a questa testa barbuta appartenente alle collezioni del British Museum. E’ un disegno grande, cosa non troppo comune per quello che riguarda la mia produzione grafica. Proprio la grandezza del foglio ha fatto ipotizzare possa essere stato lo studio su vasta scala per una scultura o per un dipinto.
Un volto non più giovane con un’espressione assai preoccupata. Pare quasi abbia visto chissà che e non sappia che pesci prendere.
Sia per dimensioni che per tipologia del tratto, il disegno può essere accomunato al volto di San Giuseppe nel grande cartone dell’Epifania. Potrebbe però essere anche direttamente collegato con i Santi Gemelli protettori della casata Medici ovvero San Cosma e Damiano. Le due opere vennero ideate da me ma poi ne affidai l’esecuzione a Raffaello da Montelupo e al Montosoli.

The British bearded head
Today I want to tell you a few things about this bearded head belonging to the collections of the British Museum. It’s a great drawing, which is not too common for my graphic production. Precisely the size of the sheet suggested that it may have been the large-scale study for a sculpture or a painting.
A face no longer young with a very worried expression. He almost seems to have seen who knows and doesn’t know which fish to take.
Both for dimensions and for the type of the line, the drawing can be linked to the face of Saint Joseph in the large cartoon of the Epiphany. However, it could also be directly connected with the Twin Saints, protectors of the Medici family, namely San Cosma and Damiano. The two works were designed by me but then entrusted the execution to Raffaello da Montelupo and Montosoli.
