Michelangelo 550: me painted by Stefano Bardini in my studio
On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I propose a painting that you probably don’t know yet. It was made by none other than Stefano Bardini and depicts me in the Roman studio of Macel de’ Corvi.
It is an oil painting on cardboard of small dimensions, in fact it measures only 25 centimeters in height by 20 in width. Despite this, Bardini was able to give an idea of what my Roman studio could have been like with quick but well-finished strokes.
Bardini began this work in a period between 1855 and 1860 and today it is kept at the Mozzi Bardini Museum and Gallery in Florence.
The importance of this small painting lies in its author. Stefano Bardini was in fact a famous Italian antique dealer, art dealer and collector, nicknamed the “prince of antique dealers”.
Initially, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, but soon realized that an artistic career would not guarantee him the standard of living he wanted. Florence, at that time, was a hub for the antiques trade, and Bardini seized the opportunity to dedicate himself to the restoration and sale of works of art.
