In occasione dei 550 anni dalla mia nascita, voglio proporvi questo ritratto che mi fece Federico Zuccari nei panni del Mosè nel 1593.

Dopo decenni dalla mia dipartita dal vostro mondo, Zuccari volle rendermi omaggio in questo modo, mettendomi nei panni dell’opera che più delle altre mia aveva dato il tormento. Mi dipinse a olio su cuoio seduto in trono, con il volto barbuto e lo sguardo fisso in direzione dello spettatore.

La posa è identica a quella del Mosè, ad eccezion fatta dello sguardo. La barba non è quella che scende sul petto con grandi volute ma la mia, più modesta e biforcuta.

Vi faccio notare un particolare che potrebbe esservi sfuggito. Guardate le braccia scoperte.

Nella parte superiore si vede una sorta di fascia color carne che le attraversa entrambe: gli stessi lacci li mostra il mio Mosè e tante altre opere come per esempio i Prigioni o lo stesso David, la Pietà Vaticana.

Nella mano sinistra stringo un disegno arrotolato mentre nella parte bassa del dipinto si vedono gli attrezzi del mestiere: compassi, un trapano ad arco, una squadra e una mazzetta.

Le mie sembianze sono quelle che riprodusse anche Daniele da Volterra ma Zuccari m’aveva conosciuto e ben aveva chiaro come fossi. La muscolatura mia, non proprio identica a quella del Mosè, era comunque possente. Pensate che ebbi la forza di scolpire fino a cinque giorni prima di morire, alla veneranda età di 89 anni.

Sulla cornice in basso è riportata l’iscrizione in latino DVM PINGIS VITAM MICHAELI ZVCCARE REDDIS/ TEQVE VNA ETERNVM NE MORIARE FACIS.

Quest’opera venne realizzata da Zuccari assieme al Ritratto di Raffello nei panni di Isaia per l’apparato decorativo della casa romana dello stesso artista. Fanno parte del ciclo che celebrava le ‘Storie della vita di Taddeo Zuccari’ e vengono ricordate negli inventari della collezione Ludovisi.

Pensate che sul retro dell’opera che mi ritrae è stato rintracciato anche il sigillo in ceralacca della famiglia Ludovisi.

Oggi il mio ritratto su cuoio appartiene alla Pinacoteca di Macerata dopo il lascito della marchesa Irene Costa Ciccolini.

Michelangelo 550: me in the shoes of Moses, painted by Federico Zuccari

On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of my birth, I want to show you this portrait that Federico Zuccari made of me in the shoes of Moses in 1593.

Decades after my departure from your world, Zuccari wanted to pay homage to me in this way, putting me in the shoes of the work that had tormented me more than any other. He painted me in oil on leather sitting on a throne, with a bearded face and a gaze fixed in the direction of the viewer.

The pose is identical to that of Moses, except for the gaze. The beard is not the one that descends to the chest in large curls but mine, more modest and forked.

I would like to point out a detail that you may have missed. Look at the bare arms.

In the upper part you can see a sort of flesh-colored band that crosses both of them: the same laces are shown in my Moses and in many other works such as the Prisoners or David himself, the Vatican Pietà.

In my left hand I hold a rolled-up drawing while in the lower part of the painting you can see the tools of the trade: compasses, a bow drill, a square and a mallet.

My features are those that Daniele da Volterra also reproduced but Zuccari had known me and was very clear about what I was like. My muscles, not exactly identical to those of Moses, were nevertheless powerful. Imagine that I had the strength to sculpt until five days before dying, at the venerable age of 89.

On the lower frame is the Latin inscription DVM PINGIS VITAM MICHAELI ZVCCARE REDDIS/ TEQVE VNA ETERNVM NE MORIARE FACIS.

This work was created by Zuccari together with the Portrait of Raphael as Isaiah for the decorative apparatus of the Roman house of the same artist. They are part of the cycle that celebrated the ‘Stories of the life of Taddeo Zuccari’ and are remembered in the inventories of the Ludovisi collection.

Just think that on the back of the work that portrays me, the wax seal of the Ludovisi family was also found.

Today my portrait on leather belongs to the Pinacoteca di Macerata after the legacy of the Marchesa Irene Costa Ciccolini.
