Papa Francesco, per sua esplicita volontà, non sarà sepolto nella Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano ma bensì nella Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, all’interno della Cappella Paolina.

In quella cappella infatti, dove già sono sepolti San Pio V e Paolo V Borghese, è esposta la Salus Populi Romani, icona dinanzi alla quale molte volte ha pregato il Santo Padre.

‘Salus Populi Romani‘ significa ‘Salvezza del Popolo Romano’. Tradizione vuole che sia stata dipinta dall’Evangelista San Luca patrono dei pittori a Gerusalemme.

Secondo la tradizione riportata da Cesare Baronio, la Salus Populi, l’immagine fu portata in processione per tre giorni per le vie di Roma. Papa Gregorio I (590–604) sostò più volte dinanzi all’opera in preghiera chiedendo la fine della pestilenza.

La Salus Populi è una tavola in legno di cedro sulla quale è stata dipinta l’immagine della Madonna a mezzo busto con il Bambino in braccio.

La Salus Populi è la più diffusa icona mariana venerata sia a Roma che nel resto del mondo. E’ anche la prima sacra effige che grazie a una bolla pontificia, ebbe l’autorizzazione di essere riprodotta.

A Maria Salus Populi Romani era molto legato papa Francesco, vescovo di Roma ed è lì, ai suoi piedi, nella nuda terra, che ha deciso di far riposare le sue spoglie.

Pensate che già nel 2023, il pontefice espresse la sua devozione a questa icona donandole una rosa d’oro.
