Michelangelo 550: quando a mia insaputa mi fecero fare la pubblicità all’estratto di carne
Cercando dei miei singolari ritratti da proporvi per celebrare i 550 anni dalla mia nascita, mi sono imbattuto in diverse campagne pubblicitarie di cui, a mia insaputa, fui protagonista.
In Francia agli inizi del Novecento, la mia immagine fu usata per promuovere l’estratto di carne prodotto dalle Liebig.
La solita azienda ebbe tra i protagonisti delle sue illustrazioni anche Raffaello e Leonardo da Vinci.
A dire il vero guardo quelle pubblicità con un pizzico di malinconia e penso a quanto fossero belle. Magari un tantino azzardate nell’accostamento di un dado da brodo granulare a me o ad altri artisti e poeti ma erano ben fatte, con un disegno che raccontava un momento importante nella storia di noi artisti.
La serie di pubblicità venne dedicata all’arte rinascimentale in Italia che fu messa in circolazione tra la fine dell’Ottocento e l’inizio del Novecento.
Nell’illustrazione si vede il Mosè ultimato di scolpire e io con il mazzuolo in mano.
Singolare come potessi scolpire così ben vestito con un raffinato cappotto blu bordato di pelliccia e abito in pendant con tanto di camicia di foggia più moderna che compare con quel colletto bianco. Sullo sfondo, appeso, si vede una riproduzione della Creazione di Adamo mentre papa Giulio II guarda l’opera assieme alla sua corte.
C’è un errore storico non da poco in questo disegno: il pontefice non vide mai il Mosè ultimato.
Pensate per esempio che il cambio della posizione del capo e delle gambe lo portai a compimento molti anni dopo la morte del pontefice.

Michelangelo 550: when, without my knowledge, they made me advertise meat extract
Looking for some unique portraits of me to propose to you to celebrate the 550th anniversary of my birth, I came across several advertising campaigns in which, without my knowledge, I was the protagonist.
In France at the beginning of the twentieth century, my image was used to promote the meat extract produced by Liebig. The same company also had Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci among the protagonists of its illustrations.
To tell the truth, I look at those advertisements with a hint of melancholy and think about how beautiful they were. Maybe a little risky in the combination of a granulated bouillon cube with me or other artists and poets but they were well done, with a drawing that told an important moment in the history of us artists.
The series of advertisements was dedicated to Renaissance art in Italy that was put into circulation between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century.
In the illustration you can see the finished sculpting of Moses and me with the mallet in my hand.
Strange how I could sculpt so well dressed in a refined blue fur-lined coat and matching suit with a more modern-style shirt that appears with that white collar. In the background, hanging, you can see a reproduction of the Creation of Adam while Pope Julius II looks at the work together with his court.
There is a significant historical error in this drawing: the pontiff never saw the finished Moses. Consider for example that I completed the change in the position of the head and legs many years after the pontiff’s death.
