3milioni di dollari per il piccolo dipinto giovanile di Raffaello
La piccola tavola dipinta da Raffaello poco più che ventenne con la Maria Maddalena in preghiera è stata battuto all’asta per una cifra che supera i 3milioni di dollari: poco più del massimo della stima iniziale.
Valutata tra 2 e 3milioni di dollari in un primo momento da Sotherby, la piccola tavola di soli 38 centimetri per 13, è stata datata 1503.
Venticinque anni fa, nel 2000, il soggetto era stato identificato come Santa Maria d’Egitto e battuto da Christie’s per 611mila dollari.
La tavola è dipinta fronte e retro. Sul verso marmorizzato sono state rintracciate le impronte digitali di Raffaello che usò per dipingere anche le dita per altre opere risalenti allo stesso periodo come la Crocifissione Mond custodita nella National Gallery di Londra.
Fino al momento il record di un Raffaello battuto all’asta è di 48milioni di dollari per il disegno battuto da Crhistie’s a Londra nel 2009 per il disegno a gesso Head of a Muse, studio preparatorio per l’affresco del Parnaso presente nei Musei Vaticani.
Rimane ignoto l’acquirente della Maddalena di Raffaello che in origine faceva parte di un trittico oggi smembrato.
Il pannello centrale purtroppo è andato perduto mentre quello laterale, per così dire gemello di quello appena battuto all’asta raffigurante Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, è esposto nella Galleria Nazionale delle Marche di Urbino.

$3 million for a small early painting by Raphael
The small panel painted by Raphael in his early twenties with Mary Magdalene in prayer was sold at auction for a figure that exceeds $3 million, just over the maximum of the initial estimate.
Initially valued between $2 and $3 million by Sotherby, the small panel measuring just 38 by 13 centimeters was dated to 1503.
Twenty-five years ago, in 2000, the subject was identified as Saint Mary of Egypt and sold by Christie’s for $611,000.
The panel is painted on both sides. Raphael’s fingerprints were found on the marbled back, which he also used to paint his fingers for other works dating back to the same period, such as the Mond Crucifixion, housed in the National Gallery in London.
So far the record for a Raphael sold at auction is 48 million dollars for the drawing sold by Christie’s in London in 2009 for the chalk drawing Head of a Muse, a preparatory study for the fresco of Parnassus in the Vatican Museums.
The buyer of Raphael’s Magdalene, which was originally part of a triptych now dismembered, remains unknown. The central panel has unfortunately been lost while the lateral one, so to speak the twin of the one just sold at auction depicting Saint Catherine of Alexandria, is exhibited in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino.
