L’opera del Natale che vi propongo oggi è l’Adorazione dei pastori dipinta nel 1562 da Jacopo da Ponte, più noto alle cronache come il Bassano.

L’artista raffigurò il momento in cui i pastori arrivarono alla capanna di Betlemme, dopo che gli angeli avevano annunciato loro il lieto evento. Come di consueto accade nell’iconografia della Natività, soprattutto italiana, il Bassano inserisce le rovine che si intravedono al di là della capanna.

Sono il simbolo del tempo pagano che si sgretola con la venuta al mondo di Cristo.

L’atmosfera del dipinto è notturna anche se le vesti dei protagonisti appaiono luminose. La Madonna con il Bambino non è al cento della scena ma occupa uno spazio defilato, a sinistra della tela dipinta a olio.

I pastori abbigliati con abiti umili che rispecchiano il loro ceto sociale, omaggiano Gesù Bambino. C’è che si inginocchia, chi si toglie il cappello in segno di rispetto.

Osservate con attenzione il pastore di spalle che mostra i piedi nudi. Trattiene a terra un agnello che già prefigura Cristo che diverrà agnello sacrificale per tutta l’umanità.

C’è un altro pastore che incuriosisce per la sua posa ed è quello che si trova a destra a gambe nude e pare quasi mostrare le terga al Salvatore in modo irrispettoso. Sta soffiando su un tizzone acceso senza rendersi conto che, alle sue spalle, è appena venuta al mondo la Luce che irraggerà il mondo intero.

Osservante con quanta delicatezza il Bassano dipinse quel sottile raggio di luce divina che scende dal cielo per illuminare Cristo.

Di quest’opera non è nota la sia storia precedente al 1750, anno in cui fu registrata negli inventari della famiglia Corsini.

The Christmas works: the Adoration of the Shepherds by Bassano

The Christmas work that I propose to you today is the Adoration of the Shepherds painted in 1562 by Jacopo da Ponte, better known in the chronicles as Bassano.

The artist depicted the moment in which the shepherds arrived at the hut in Bethlehem, after the angels had announced the happy event. As is usual in the iconography of the Nativity, especially Italian, Bassano includes the ruins that can be glimpsed beyond the hut.

They are the symbol of the pagan time that crumbles with the coming into the world of Christ.

The atmosphere of the painting is nocturnal even if the clothes of the protagonists appear luminous. The Madonna with the Child is not at the center of the scene but occupies a secluded space, to the left of the oil-painted canvas.

The shepherds dressed in humble clothes that reflect their social class, pay homage to Baby Jesus. There are those who kneel, those who take off their hats as a sign of respect.

Look carefully at the shepherd from behind who shows his bare feet. He is holding a lamb on the ground that already prefigures Christ who will become a sacrificial lamb for all humanity.

There is another shepherd who arouses curiosity for his pose and it is the one on the right with bare legs who seems to show his backside to the Savior. He is blowing on a lit ember without realizing that the Light that will illuminate the entire world has just come into the world.

Observant with how much delicacy Bassano painted that thin ray of divine light that descends from the sky to illuminate Christ.

The history of this work prior to 1750, the year in which it was registered in the inventories of the Corsini family, is unknown.
